Like a dog with a bone – once a story gets stuck in my mind it is difficult to stop chewing and chewing until my teeth fall out ………

It started with a visit to The Soutpiel Phenomenon blog * by Lisa Roberts, escalated to Please Review the ANC Youth League Web Site and is now being fed by numerous e-mails and references to other ramblings of a madman.

Michael suggests that South Africans all support the ANC Youth League by making donations of R0.01 each and INSISTING on a receipt. Should you wish to support this worthy cause then the bank details are as follows:

ANC Fundraising
Nedbank
Branch code: 128405
Current account: 1284 006 824

As the ANC Youth League says: “Our party relies on the generous donations from members and supporters to ensure its financial footing. Please make your contribution to a successful campaign that reaches every home in South Africa. All donations are welcome, whether big or small, regular or once-off.”

I searched long and hard for an e-mail address that you could send your receipt request to, eventually landing on the ANC Youth League Contact Us page which says; “If you have a question you would  like to ask please, email us…..” BUT, there is no email address on the page at all (Well none that I can see, please prove me wrong!).

My apologies you will have to write a letter to the ANC Youth League in order to get your receipt: PO Box 61884, Marshalltown, 2107 or you could phone 011 376 1000.

In my thwarted quest to find a contact e-mail address I came across two other web sites: Julius Malema and Julius Sello Malema on Twitter. I am still struggling with whether or not the Twitter account is the REAL Julius as I refuse to accept that any South African can spew the crap that this Julius Sello Malema tweets.

An example of the garbage tweeted by Julius Sello Malema is this beauty: “I am a child of a domestic worker. Those people are paid from white people’s grocery change.”

And, of course, this beauty of a quote sent me off on another tangent:

  • There are approximately 1 million domestic workers in South Africa.
  • The 2001 Census puts South Africa’s population at 44 819 778.
  • The 2001 Census indicates the racial groupings in South Africa as 79% Black, 8.9% Coloured, 2.5% Indian and 9.6% White
  • The 2001 Census indicates that 58% of households in South Africa are formal dwellings. See: Type of dwelling by population group of head of household.

For our purposes we are going to assume that a domestic worker can only be employed by FORMAL households defined as a House or brick structure on a separate stand or yard, a Flat in a block of flats, a Town/cluster/semi-detached house or a Unit-in retirement village.

And we are going to break the above four household types down by racial classification:

House or brick structure on a separate stand or yard
Black – 2 673 181
Coloured – 452 258
Indian – 140 641
White – 1 034 346
Other – 31 160

Flat in a block of flats
Black – 153 096
Coloured – 58 042
Indian – 34 279
White – 208 120
Other – 4 631

Town/cluster/semi-detached house
Black – 96 886
Coloured – 98 546
Indian – 46 508
White – 135 073
Other – 4 526

Unit in retirement village
Black – 7 354
Coloured – 802
Indian – 340
White – 31 748
Other – 190

For the purposes of this argument and in line with Julius’s remarks about domestic workers and his contentions re black vs white we will total up the above FORMAL households:

  • Black Households – 2 930 517
  • Coloured Households – 609648
  • Indian Households – 221768
  • White Households – 1 409 287
  • Other Households – 40 507

This gives us a grand total of FORMAL Households in South Africa of 5 211 727.

Let us go back to labour force and see that there are approximately 1 000 000 domestic workers in South Africa.

IF Julius is correct in saying “I am a child of a domestic worker. Those people are paid from white people’s grocery change.” then each white formal household employs 1.4 Domestic Workers AND NOT ONE of the other 3 802 440 FORMAL Households employs any domestics at all.

Stay tuned for more FUN.
