The SASOL South African Rally Championship resumed after a six-week break in the same thrilling fashion experienced at the end of June.

This weekend’s VW Rally in Port Elizabeth, the fifth round of the eight event championship, saw Castrol Team Toyota’s Johnny Gemmell take the fight to Volkswagen on their home turf to win the event by just 1,5 seconds from Enzo Kuun.

Gemmell and navigator Drew Sturrock took just three special stages on Friday’s leg of the event to assert their authority on the rally. The first stage was won by Conrad Rautenbach by a 12 second margin over Gemmell with the second quickest time. A win for Gemmell on the second stage saw the gap close to just 1,2 seconds with that deficit converted to a lead of 13 seconds over Jan Habig by the end of the third stage.

By the end of the first day Enzo Kuun had taken over from Jan Habig as Gemmell’s main challenger and was 5,3 seconds off the lead. Through the next five stages on Saturday Kuun kept up the pressure but was unable to move ahead of Gemmell.

Going into the final stage of the event, a 1,7 kilometre spectator special at Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth, the gap was the same as it was at the beginning of the day but a do-or-die on the part of the VW driver saw him close the gap to just 1,5 seconds in the final stage. A close finish, but not as close as the 0,7 second margin held by Gemmell at the end of the Rally of South Africa six weeks ago.

Johnny Gemmell and Drew Storrock won the Volkswagen Rally in Port Elizabeth 25 July 2010

“The VW Rally is one of the more treacherous rallies in the series,” said Gemmell afterward. “It’s a really quick event on typical forest roads with varying surfaces that can catch you out so easily. We knew that we had to very quickly find a pace that would get us in a position to challenge for the lead without taking undue risks.

“Once Conrad dropped off the pace we were able to settle into a really good rhythm at the front of the field. When Enzo Kuun took over the challenge from Habig we knew we had a battle on our hands but we were able to manage the gap and bring the car home in one piece. Our Auris S2000 ran flawlessly throughout the event to give us a really clean run. No punctures and not a single equipment problem gave us the confidence to chase for the win.”

At the overnight stop there were three Toyota Auris S2000s in the top five positions with the Pirtek Auris of Hein Lategan in third place Castrol works car of Mark Cronje in fifth in close support of Gemmell.

Lategan went off the road in the second of Saturday’s stages and had his rally ended by a combination of suspension damage to the Auris and an injury to his hand caused by the transfer of the impact force through the steering wheel. Mark Cronje lost three minutes in the same stage through a puncture 8 kilometres from the end of the stage.

At the end of the final stage it was very much advantage Toyota in this event and Gemmell in the championship. For Toyota this was the 14th overall win in the VW Rally in its 27 year history with Serge Damseaux accounting for 12 of those wins, Mark Cronje one (2008) and now a maiden win in the Eastern Cape for Gemmell.

In the championship the advantage swings to Gemmell as the only driver to win two events so far this season. With 86 points scored he now shares the lead in the championship with Enzo Kuun with three events still to run.

“This came close to being a dream event for Toyota,” says Castrol Team Toyota team principal, Glyn Hall. “The win was good but we showed that there is the underlying strength within the team and amongst our privateers to possibly fill the podium. Mechanically the performance of the two works Auris S2000s was flawless with the privateer cars also having pretty clean runs aside from damage from going off the road.

Visser du Plessis scored a fine fifth place in his Pirtek Auris and Mark Cronje recovered to finish eighth overall and score valuable points. Once again we had a nail biting close finish – good for spectator interest but tense for the team – with Johnny able to hold off the challenge and take the win. All in all it was a good day for rallying and a good day for the team and our partners Castrol, the Innovation Group, and Imperial.”

Class A6 was a Toyota benefit with Leeroy Poulter winning the class in his RunX ahead of Tjaart Conradie in an Auris and Craig Trott in a RunX. Class A5 was won by Ashley Haigh-Smith in his Yaris with Chad Lambert, also in a Yaris, second in the class. Class N3 produced a maiden win for the father and daughter team of Stefanie and Willem Hugo in a RunX.

During the recent Survivor charity event in Cape Town, Ashley Hayden showed her softer side as she handed out gifts to homeless children now residing in one of the Homestead houses.

Homestead is a 23-year-old NGO that operates seven Cape Town-based projects for street children. The Homestead focuses exclusively on boys (the majority of street children are boys) while a sister shelter called ‘Ons Plek’ attends to the girls. The Homestead was Ashley’s charity of choice during Survivor and helping children in need is a cause that’s extremely close to her heart.

Swedo Car Cape Town generously donated 100 Volvo Frisbees and, according to Ashley,” the kids from the Homestead were so pleased – we gave them the frisbees and the beanies, and you would have thought it was Christmas! It gives you a real sense of perspective on life as to how blessed we are with all we have.”

Local celebrity Ashley Hayden showed her mettle on Survivor South Africa, by outwitting, outplaying and outlasting, in one of the most gruelling competitions, right to the very end. It was only in the final that she lost to fellow Survivor, GiGi.

After making it through Survivor, Ashley is no doubt enjoying the return to her various business interests as well as her charity work. But one of this Survivor’s biggest treats will definitely be when she takes delivery of her brand-new Volvo XC60.

Volvo Car South Africa is extremely proud to have Ashley Hayden representing the brand and looks forward to a long and exciting partnership with one of the toughest Survivors in the game.

Jaguar returns to the starting grid at Le Mans on June 12, as the stunning XKR GT2 sports car lines up alongside the world’s leading endurance racers for the classic 24-hour event. As Jaguar celebrates its 75th anniversary of building and racing cars, it is fitting that the British marque returns to competition at the circuit where it earned seven race wins between 1951 and 1990.

Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Jaguar Cars said, “Motorsport has always been important to Jaguar. Our domination of Le Mans in the 1950s was a foundation stone in our history and our success in the late ’80s and early ’90s reinforced our reputation as one of the great sports car manufacturers.

“As we look to the future with our new range of high performance ‘R’branded cars – the XKR and XFR – we aim to make the Jaguar brand synonymous with motorsports once again. It’s good to be back”

The XKR GT2 racer competing at Le Mans is being run by JaguarRSR, and shares many of the basic components and technologies with the road-going XKR. Jointly developed by Jaguar’s engineering and design groups and the RSR team, the racer features the road car’s lightweight aluminium body structure and a tuned version of its 5.0-litre supercharged AJ133 V8 engine developing in excess of 500 horsepower.

Drivers Marc Goossens, Ryan Dalziel and Paul Gentilozzi will be piloting the car during the punishing 24-hour race, having gained initial experience with the vehicle during the American Le Mans Series events earlier during 2010.

Belgian driver Goossens is vastly experienced in sportscar racing, and has competed at Le Mans on nine previous occasions.

“As a sportscar driver, the Le Mans 24 Hour race provides the greatest challenge, so competing in the American Le Mans Series events has provided valuable training,” he commented. “It is a great honour to be selected as one of the drivers for Jaguar’s return to Le Mans.”

Teammate Dalziel, born in Scotland, brings extensive experience in single-seaters and sportscars, but is racing at Le Mans for the first time.

“It has always been my dream to compete at Le Mans, and, as a British driver, to be at the wheel of a Jaguar makes it even more special,” explained Dalziel. “It will be without doubt the highlight of my racing career.”

The trio of drivers is completed by the American Paul Gentilozzi, one of the principal partners of the JaguarRSR team, who is making his third appearance at Le Mans in the GT2 class.

“It is great to return to Le Mans after 15 years, and I look forward to the chance to drive there again,” said Gentilozzi. “The track is like no other in the world. It is a challenge to every driver, but I know I have exceptionally talented team-mates, and we will do the best we can out there in the XKR GT2 with race number 81!”

Jaguar XKR GT2 Sports Car

The names of Jaguar and Le Mans are inextricably linked. With a total of seven wins between 1951 and 1990, the marque is the single most successful British car maker in the history of the race.

During the 1950s, Jaguar’s founder Sir William Lyons sought to prove his cars were as fast and as strong as far more expensive rivals, with legends such as Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn behind the wheel of the iconic C-type and D-type racers.

In 1951, the C-type won Le Mans at its first attempt, with a further victory in 1953. Its successor the D-type took Le Mans wins in 1955, 1956 and 1957. Technical innovations such as the C-type’s disc brakes made their debut on Jaguars at Le Mans, and were rapidly adopted by car makers the world over.

After a two-decade absence, Jaguar returned to France with a works team in the late 1980s and once again took race wins in 1988, with the V12-powered XJR-9LM Group C car, and in 1990, with the XJR-12, featuring drivers including Johnny Dumfries and Martin Brundle. Such was the success of the XJR racers, that Jaguar was crowned World Sports Car Champions three times in five seasons.

The 78th edition of the 24 Heures du Mans has started in the best possible way for Peugeot. After having dominated free practice, Sebastien Bourdais took provisional pole with 3’19″711. The four Peugeot 908 HDi FAPs this evening occupy the first four places.

Track conditions were ideal for free practice and the three factory Peugeot 908 HDi FAPs were able to attack an intensive set up programme right from the off. The team’s drivers quickly found their mark and were soon heading the rankings. The only incident – a slow puncture on the front right of car No 3.

At the end of the session four Peugeots held the first four places with car No 2 in the hands of Franck Montagny (3’20″034) already faster than Sarrazin’s 2009 pole position (3’22″888).

With rain expected Thursday, Team Peugeot Total’s strategy was to chase after a time right from the off. Alexander Wurz (No 1), Stephane Sarrazin (No 2) and Sebastien Bourdais (No 3) kicked off the charge The session was then interrupted by two red flags in quick succession, causing the Peugeot Sport drivers to be hampered by heavy traffic. But with half an hour left to go Sebastien Bourdais got a clear run and took the pole with a time 3’19″711 just ahead of team mates Alexander Wurz and Stephane Sarrazin. The Peugeot hatrick was completed by Nicolas Lapierre in fourth place.

Bruno Famin (Technical Director) “Obviously we’re pleased to have our three cars in the first three places. And given their speed and motivation, pleased also that they achieved their times without incident. Sebastien reckons he could have gone quicker, but not by very much. If it rains tomorrow we are in a good position, but we can’t relax vis a vis the competition, I think they didn’t show their full potential.”

Sebastien Bourdais

Sébastien Bourdais: “It is only provisional pole. However we are expecting difficult conditions tomorrow so it is good to have it in the bag. If it is dry tomorrow we will have to have another go. It is a good feeling to finish the session in the lead, especially ‘at home’ in Le Mans. The overall result shows that the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP is still competitive. Now we have to put it all together in the
race.”

Alexqnder Wurz : “I think I could have gone faster, and maybe got provisional pole, but there was a lot of traffic. That said, Seb did a great job. Above all it is the race that counts and with that in mind I am pleased we improved on this morning’s set up.

Stéphane Sarrazin: “I ran into a lot of traffic – that’s how it is qualifying here! Normally it works out well for me but not today. I did my fastest lap with my first set of new tyres. Without a small mistake it could have been quicker. We will see what happen tomorrow, especially regarding the weather. Overall it is so far a good result for Peugeot.”

Results:

1. PEUGEOT 908 HDi FAP (Bourdais): 3’19”711
2. PEUGEOT 908 HDi FAP (Wurz): 3’20”317
3. PEUGEOT 908 HDi FAP (Sarrazin): 3’30”325
4. PEUGEOT 908 HDi FAP (Lapierre): 3’21”192
5. AUDI R15 TDI (Rockenfeller): 3’23”578

Lexus enhances its stance as the first premium automotive manufacturer to bring full PERFORMANCEHYBRID vehicles to South Africa, with the addition of one of the world’s most opulent limousines, the LS600h L, to the range. Brimming with luxury and technology, the LS600h L joins the RX450h and GS450h PERFORMANCEHYBRIDs in Lexus’ growing model line-up, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to performance with conscience.

Sitting at the pinnacle of Lexus’ line-up in South Africa, the LS600h L takes the considerable improvements effected on the LS460 earlier this year to another level, offering an extended wheelbase and the combination of powerful and refined V8 petrol and electric power. It makes the luxury limousine the most innovative car in its segment and a powerful statement for corporate executives who may find themselves in the lavish rear seat: their luxury car investment is done with an outward display of carbon conscious mobility.

“The LS has always been a showcase for the latest technology Lexus has to offer,” says Kevin Flynn, General Manager of Lexus SA. “The LS600h L complements the massive step forward LS460 took earlier this year with a drive-train that offers even more power and refinement thanks to its full hybrid characteristics.”

Each new Lexus hybrid further reinforces the importance of hybrid systems as the core powertrain technology for the brand. And Lexus remains the first, and only, premium manufacturer offering a comprehensive hybrid model range available today.

The LS600h L, as its name suggests, is only available in long-wheel base configuration for the South African market. As with the rest of Lexus’ PERFORMANCEHYBRID range, the “600″ refers to the LS600h L’s 6,0-litre performance, although it combines 5,0-litre V8 petrol power and electric output in Lexus Hybrid Drive. The additional 120mm the LS600h L enjoys is purely in the LS’ wheelbase, reserved exclusively for rear seat legroom.

The flagship hybrid is further identified by a unique grille, shared in concept with the face of the GS450h. As is becoming a signature Lexus PERFORMANCEHYBRID styling trait, the headlamps also differ from the LS460, the three projector lenses featuring the world’s first LED lighting technology for low beam. There is a blue highlight around each LED unit, giving the LS600h L a unique headlamp signature.

Lexus LS600h L

As with other Lexus PERFORMANCEHYBRIDs, the LS600h L is subtly badged, with hybrid badges down the side sills and distinctive blue hue bootlid and grille badges. Specific 19-inch alloy wheels complete the LS600h L design package.

Much of the LS600h L luxury specification is shared with the substantially upgraded LS460. There are no options available on the LS range, meaning new features such as Active Cruise Control, upgraded rear seat entertainment system (including a nine-inch LCD monitor that folds down from the roof), Intelligent Park Assist and the ottoman style rear seats are all standard.

The comprehensive specification wants for nothing. Lexus Hard Disk Drive Navigation offers the latest in onboard mapping and entertainment features with quicker and more accurate operation and the ability to store data onboard. The touch-screen system features voice activation and Bluetooth connectivity as well as featuring an external input terminal and USB port. Of course, it is all supported by the excellent 15 channel 450 Watt Mark Levinson digital surround sound system with no less than 19 speakers and independent control from the rear seats.

With the additional legroom in the rear afforded by the extended wheelbase, the LS600h L becomes a veritable business lounge to continue working in on the go, or catch up on some relaxation. The individual, full leather seats are divided by a bespoke centre console and have electric adjustment from either the console or a remote control unit. Both seats can be reclined and also include a centre seatback flexing function. In addition, the left hand rear seat can be reclined to a maximum of 45 degrees and further features a fully retractable “ottoman” thigh and footrest for the ultimate in limousine seating comfort. To enhance legroom when fully reclined, the travel limit of the front seat has been extended forward by 40mm.

One touch of a rear centre console button with memory function automatically reclines the rear seat and extends the ottoman thigh and footrest, whilst simultaneously folding down the front seat headrest and moving the entire seat forward to its maximum point of travel. When the rear passenger door is opened, the ottoman seat automatically retracts to maximise ease of entry and egress, whilst opening the front passenger door automatically returns the front seat to its foremost standard position and raises the headrest.

Coupled to the vibration massage system found in the LS460, the left hand rear seat in the LS600h L is equipped with an air-assisted massage system based on the technology and operational qualities of the best massage chair on the market today. It features a total of eight pneumatic chambers covering the area of the occupant’s shoulders, back and hips, and reproduces professional massage techniques with a range of different programmes (the intensity of which may be adjusted by the user), including Shiatsu, shoulder and lower back acupressure.

If you’re more inclined to drive the LS600h L, Lexus’ PERFORMANCEHYBRID drivetrain will reward with the alacrity and refinement fitting of a luxury limousine and only possible with full hybrid technology.

The LS600h L is a full hybrid, capable of operating in petrol or electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both. With a maximum system output of 327kW, the LS600h L’s state-of-the art hybrid system offers an unparalleled balance of performance, quietness and environmental efficiency. Owing to the inherent Noise and Vibration (NV) improvements offered by its hybrid powertrain, the LS600h L is designed to set a new standard for silent running in the premium automotive segment, with an unparalleled depth and density of cabin quietness. The new Lexus hybrid flagship is quite possibly the quietest car in the world.

Combining the 290kW and 520Nm of the 5,0-litre petrol V8 with an electric motor output of 165kW, the LS600h L’s hybrid system generates a peak combined output rating of 327kW. The Lexus flagship will accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 6.3 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. Equally impressive is the potent mid-range torque afforded by the system’s powerful electric motor.

Operating in parallel with the V8 petrol engine, the electric motor is capable of delivering maximum torque of 300Nm instantaneously, and seamlessly, from standstill. This characteristic is most beneficial in mid-range performance during overtaking manoeuvres, and the Lexus LS600h L will accelerate from 80km/h to 120km/h in 4.3 seconds. Conversely, the LS600h L also proves substantially more frugal than comparable cars in its segment, returning a class-leading combined fuel consumption figure of 9.3 l/100km. Moreover, the new Lexus returns CO2 emissions of 219 g/km; markedly less than rival, premium segment sedans with similar engine power.

The impressive performance is handled sublimely by the world’s first, full-time, all-wheel drive hybrid powertrain. In similar vein to the GS450h, the hybrid transmission is concealed in the space taken up by a conventional automatic transmission. The Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT) in the LS600h L drives all four wheels permanently through a TORSEN® limited slip diff that distributes power 40% to the front wheels and 60% to the rear. However, torque distribution is continuously controlled and can be varied between 30:70 and 50:50 front/rear.

As in the LS460, the LS600h L rides on air suspension with Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) that maximises passenger comfort by synchronising vehicle roll and pitch. In addition, the driver can choose between Normal, Comfort, and Sport driving modes.

“Being able to offer a Lexus to those customers in pursuit of the ultimate luxury experience is fitting for the brand,” says Flynn. “To be able to offer them that vehicle as a PERFORMANCEHYBRID makes it all the more responsible and compelling as a corporate statement and as the ultimate, not only in luxury, but in innovative technology. The LS600h L truly is the most innovative, high-tech, luxury car in the world.”

As with the rest of the Lexus range, the LS600h L is covered by a four years/100 000km warranty and full maintenance plan. The comprehensively equipped car features no options and is available immediately for R1,555,000.

The highly aspirational Peugeot 308 CC coupé-cabriolet has become even more appealing with the introduction of a six-speed automatic gearbox model.

The new variant augments the manual-transmission version, and will make the 308 CC’s unique and versatile motoring experience available to a wider audience.

At the same time, both models benefit from an upgraded, more efficient and more powerful four-cylinder engine.

The new powerplant remains a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit with a 1,6-litre capacity. However, it now conforms to the latest Euro 5 emissions standards, benefitting power output, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions levels.

The new 308 CC Automatic is identical to the manual gearbox version in terms of aesthetic design, interior execution and standard equipment levels, but delivers the engine’s urge to the front wheels via a latest-generation six-speed automatic gearbox.

The new AT6 transmission has been optimised for efficient operation and offers a smooth, seamless shift action, with the added convenience of completely clutchless operation – ideal for coping with congested roads and stop/start traffic.

Peugeot 308 CC

At the same time, the gearbox’s well chosen ratios make the most of the engine’s urge, ensuring optimum performance under all conditions. A kick-down feature ensures added response when quick acceleration is required, for instance when overtaking slower traffic.

The new 308 CC Automatic also offers four full seats, ample luggage space and the comprehensive standard specification of the manual gearbox version. And it delivers the same, inimitable pleasure of open-top driving – including the ability to opt for either coupé or cabriolet motoring at the push of a button.

A chassis tuned for both taut handling and smooth comfort ensures high standards of ride and handling, while a cutting-edge turbocharged engine delivers suitably enthusiastic urge.

Coinciding with the introduction of the 308 CC 1.6 Auto, is the arrival of a new, updated high-pressure turbocharged engine, which is now standard on both manual and auto 308 CC derivatives.

The new power unit is the result of a €1.5 billion global development programme and has been designed to fully comply with the latest Euro 5 standards, while offering enhanced response, reduced noise levels, more frugal fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.

Maximum power increases from 110 kW at 5 800 r/min to 115 kW at 6 000 r/min, while the torque peak of 240 Nm at just 1 400 r/min remains unchanged.

As a result, the 0-100 km/h acceleration time of the 308 CC manual gearbox model improves from 9,8 sec to 9,6 sec, while the top speed remains at 215 km/h. The standing-start 1 000 m dash is completed in just 30,5 sec.

The manual gearbox 308 CC’s combined cycle fuel consumption drops from 7,5 litres/100 km to 7,2 litres/100 km, while CO2 exhaust emissions are also reduced – from 177 g/km to 167 g/km.

In the case of the new 308 CC Auto, the updated engine allows a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9,8 sec and a top speed of 212 km/h, while the one-kilometre standing start acceleration test stops the clocks at 31,0 sec.

The 308 CC Auto has a rated combined fuel consumption figure of 7,7 litres/100 km, with accompanying CO2 exhaust emissions of 179 g/km.

Pricing

The recommended retail pricing of the updated 308 CC range is as follows:

308 CC Manual – R336 500
308 CC Automatic – R349 800

Both derivatives are covered by a three-year/100 000 km warranty, and a five-year/90 000 km service plan.

As far back as 1982, Mitsubishi Motors successfully launched the all-new Pajero 4×4, a vehicle tough enough to go where others feared to tread, yet at the same time enjoying the sophisticated specification associated with top-end sedan models. Now in its fourth generation, Mitsubishi Motors has upped the ante with increased power and torque in its 3,2L DI-DC diesel engines.

The Mitsubishi Pajero 3,2L DI-DC boasts increased performance with an output of 140 kW of power and 441 Nm of torque. Previously, the 3,2L DI-DC engine produced 121 kW of power and 373 Nm of torque. Matched to this model year change is a five-speed automatic gearbox, INVEC-II with enhanced gear ratios to better suit the engine refinements on the diesel model.

“We are delighted with our Pajero customers who have remained loyal over the years, and we find that we have an extremely high retention rate. Approximately 80% of our Pajero sales are existing customers. These customers are discerning buyers and find that the Pajero is a perfect fit for their lifestyle. Customers will now have the benefit of more engine power, improved and better performance off-road capabilities and better towing capacity,” says Suraiya Naidoo, Divisional Manager of Mitsubishi Motors.

The Pajero’s history and its ability to rise to the challenge are synonymous with the history and adventurous spirit of Mitsubishi Motors itself. From the searing heat of the equator to the extreme cold of the artic, the Pajero has conquered it all, earning the absolute trust of its owners in widely differing environments of 170 countries throughout the world.

The engine in the Pajero 3,2L DI-DC has undergone a number of technological enhancements to achieve the increased power. An improved pump impeller in the water pump and a modified port form in the intake manifold and the opening temperature on the thermostat have been changed. Certain modifications have also taken place on the cylinder head, injectors and turbo-charger. Not only is this new engine quieter than the previous model, it is also both cleaner and more economical giving improved Co2 emissions which are reduced to 245 gm/km from the previous 274 gm/km.

The Pajero is, and has always been, a 4×4 specifically designed to go anywhere, no matter the terrain. The four-wheel-drive (4WD) system comprises of the sophisticated Super Select 4WD-II transfer case with both ASTC (Active Stability Traction Control) and the rear differential lock (available on GLX LWB only) — developed on the bedrock of MMC’s all-wheel-control (AWC) concept and delivering significant improvements in both off-road and on-highway performance.

Mitsubishi Pajero

Security and safety is paramount to Mitsubishi and the standard fitment of the theft alarm sensors inside the interior light fitting uses a supersonic wave sensor for motion detection inside the vehicle. A further warning alarm in this system is the inclination sensor which detects the vehicle inclination angle. For example, if the vehicle is locked and an attempt is made to tow away it away, it will sense the angle change and engage the alarm.

In the case of the cut-off of power supply and the interruption of communication is detected, the theft alarm siren will automatically operate off the internal battery power supply.

Parking is made easy with the Pajero’s optional rear view camera, which is automatically engaged upon selecting reverse gear, with the view displayed on the central screen. At the click of a switch, whilst driving forward, the reverse view can also be displayed should the need arise.

For those customers who embody the Mitsubishi Motors ethos of go anywhere, anytime, Mitsubishi Motors has now introduced the Mitsubishi Integrated Communication System (MICS) into this version of the Pajero. The latest GARMAP™ navigation system is a standard feature across the range of Pajero SWB and LWB models, in both the petrol and diesel derivatives. The latest map updates can be downloaded over the internet, saving the customer the added cost of purchasing updates. Navigation can be operated whilst operating the radio, CD or iPod, and the voice prompts will mute the music. The route mapping can be displayed on the 6,5-inch HD TFT digital touch-screen monitor. Operation can be by remote control, as the system is integrated into the steering-wheel controls.

“The new standard Mitsubishi Integrated Communications System (MICS) will give customers the freedom to navigate far reaching destinations without fear of getting lost,” adds Naidoo.

The receiver and transmitter inside the highly sensitive FM/AM radio receiver with RDS boasts a very strong transmitting signal. The superb Rockford Fosgate™ sound system (available in GLS models only) plays CD, DVD, CD-R, VCD, MP3, JPEG and MPEG4. Standard DVD operation includes sub-titles, zoom and parental function.

Bluetooth operation is compatible with any Bluetooth phone, irrespective of make or model. One can dial, answer and reject calls from the touch screen, the incoming call number is displayed and the call register can be downloaded. A separate microphone provides improved sound quality and A2DP (plays music via Bluetooth).

Full iPod functionality is available from the touch screen. The virtual CDC is able to copy 5 audio discs, and can copy individual songs.

The optional tyre pressure monitoring system displays tyre pressure and temperature. The system allows for driver alerts, ID pairing and tyre change etc.

As a safety measure, DVD viewing is not possible whilst the car is in motion. Mitsubishi promotes safe vehicle operation, which is ultimately the responsibility of the driver.

The latest GARMAP™ navigation system (MICS) is compatible with previous fourth generation Pajero models sold and can be retrofitted through Mitsubishi Motors dealerships.

“We are pleased that the franchise supplier, Planet Electronics, who developed this system together with Mitsubishi, has a nationwide footprint to maintain and service this latest satellite system. Mitsubishi owners are free-spirited and for them the journey is the destination,” says Naidoo.

Superior comfort and well-designed interior ergonomics are standard in the Pajero. Easy access and step-to-seat distance enables drivers to vary their seating positions with ease. The optional third-row of seats in the LWB folds away into the floor in seconds, or can be removed entirely, leaving a flat loading base with a generous under-floor storage compartment. Headrests can be stored away under the seats for maximum space.

The Pajero’s toughness and performance were refined and perfected on rallying terrain. Rallying is a rough, tough sport which makes enormous demands on any vehicle, and the roughest, toughest rally of all is the notorious Dakar. In 26 years of competing, the Pajero absolutely dominated the Dakar’s leader board and won outright twelve times.

The technical superiority of its drivetrain, four-wheel independent suspension and stability and traction control systems have been honed in these extreme conditions. Phenomenal reliability has been proven time and time again.

“Unfortunately the economic crisis has taken its toll on Mitsubishi’s participation in Dakar. However, the experience and engineering excellence achieved over the years has been of benefit to all Pajero customers,” adds Naidoo.

“It is Mitsubishi Motors unwavering philosophy of “creating new products that surpass their predecessors through motor sports” that enables us to proudly deliver both driving pleasure and peace of mind to all our Pajero customers. The overall package of the Pajero 3,2L DI-DC is now more attractive and offers customers and new purchasers who are looking for a large SUV offering a superior ownership experience,” concludes Naidoo.

Pricing:

The Mitsubishi Pajero GLS models come standard with a five-year / 100 000 km maintenance plan and the Pajero GLX has a three-year / 100 000 km maintenance plan. The warranty on both the GLS and GLX models is three-year / 100 000 km.

Pajero 3.2 GLX DI-D LWB: R533 900
Pajero 3.2 GLS DI-D LWB: R624 200
Pajero 3.2 GLS DI-D SWB: R523 200
Pajero 3.8 GLS LWB: R605 900
Pajero 3.8 GLS SWB: R481 900

Munich. From trendsetter to bestseller. Within just eleven years, one million BMW X5 models have been sold. The anniversary edition, a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim, came off the assembly line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg/South Carolina today and is soon to be delivered to a customer in China. Achieving the seven-digit production figure is a further milestone in the success story of the first Sports Activity Vehicle. When it premiered in 1999, the four-wheel driven BMW X5 was the first vehicle of its kind. Since then, the concept of combining superior dynamics on tarmac with outstanding traction on off-road terrain, has been a show-stopper worldwide, whilst also generating crucial impulses for the BMW model portfolio. With the family of BMW X models, which has meanwhile grown to comprise a total of four members, the company has recorded steadily increasing sales figures unmatched by any other manufacturer with comparable vehicles.

The BMW X5 remains the symbol and most crucial innovator for the continuing success of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept. The spacious five-door car offers up to seven seats, its intelligent four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive guarantees awesome acceleration, both on and off road. Permanent, electronically controlled four-wheel drive technology distributes motive force to the front and rear wheels variably and according to each specific situation. Furthermore, a luxurious interior ambience and a wide choice of innovative driver assistance systems contribute towards the characteristic manifestation of driving pleasure so typical of a BMW.

Moreover, numerous awards document the outstanding product quality with regard to design, driving pleasure, safety and reliability.

BMW X5

In 2007, the BMW X5 received, inter alia, the design prize “autonis” awarded by the trade journal “auto motor und sport” for the most attractive design, as well as a Gold Award in the J.D. Power Study on customer satisfaction in North America. The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) voted this Sports Activity Vehicle as the “Top Safety Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour both in 2007 and 2008. Current proof of the vehicle’s exceptional reliability is given by the latest breakdown statistics issued by Europe’s largest automobile club ADAC, in which the BMW X5 ranks second place behind the BMW X3 in the all-terrain vehicle category.

Again in 2010, the BMW X5 is more than ever a role model and benchmark in its class in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency, variability, premium quality and safety. With a concisely modified design, a thoroughly revised engine range and additional innovative equipment features, it continues to extend its lead within the competitive environment. Its trendsetting qualities include outstanding efficiency unparalleled in this particular segment. A prime example of this is the BMW X5 xDrive30d, which is powered by a 180 kW/245 bhp straight six-cylinder diesel engine and achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.4 litres/100 km in the EU test cycle.

With its multitude of qualities the BMW X5 has become the most significant innovator within the entire competitive environment of four-wheel driven vehicles. At the same time, the premium car builder has also repeatedly assumed the cutting edge in each respective segment with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW X6, and with the compact BMW X1.

The development of the BMW Spartanburg plant is also closely linked with the success story of the BMW X5. The location, which has existed for 15 years now, has become the most crucial centre of expertise for BMW X models within the BMW Group’s global production network. Built in Spartanburg, the BMW X5 is now exported to more than 120 countries, with the BMW X6 also being produced there for export to the entire global market. Before the end of this year, production of the latest BMW X3 generation will commence at this location.

Peugeot has added the convenience of an automatic gearbox to its innovative Peugeot 3008 crossover range.

The new 3008 Premium 1.6 THP Automatic links the French marque’s latest, advanced six-speed automatic transmission to the lively and eco-friendly 1,6-litre turbocharged petrol engine already offered in manual-gearbox 3008 derivatives.

At the same time, the Premium specification level provides a comprehensive array of safety, luxury and convenience features, while the raised ride height, spacious interior and versatile seating arrangement continues to offer a segment-defining crossover motoring experience.

The third-generation AT6 transmission, specifically designed and developed to Peugeot’s specifications and requirements, is able to cope with torque peaks of up to 300 Nm, but is also lighter and more compact than its predecessor.

Efficiency-related technologies have allowed substantial savings in fuel consumption, together with reduced emissions. For instance, the torque converter has been optimised to reduce friction-related losses and improve overall efficiency.

Particular emphasis was also placed on gearshift accuracy and shift speed. Key changes include more direct hydraulic control, and optimised electronic control unit mapping that, for instance, allows rapid multiple gear changes.

The result is a gearbox that offers marked improvements in terms of refinement, accuracy and overall response. The six ratios have been selected to allow instant acceleration and all-round tractability, while making the most of the turbo engine’s generous torque delivery across a wide rev range.

The gearset has also been designed to favour good fuel consumption in everyday urban driving conditions, which demand crisp reactions at low engine speeds. However, the sixth gear is focussed on maximising fuel efficiency at cruising speeds, with the added benefit of lower engine noise levels.

The gearbox offers two driving modes. The first, fully automatic mode provides ultimate convenience and stress-free driving, while continuously adapting shift points to best suit individual driving styles. The second mode offers a more interactive, sporty driving experience, thanks to sequential gear selection.

3008 Premium 1600 THP Automatic

The 3008 Premium 1.6 Automatic is powered by Peugeot’s latest, Euro 5-compliant EP6CDT four-cylinder engine. The 1,6-litre powerplant employs variable valve timing and advanced turbocharging to produce a healthy 115 kW of maximum power at 6 000 r/min, coupled to a torque peak of 240 Nm, already on tap from 1 400 r/min.

The result is a mix of brisk performance, incisive acceleration, and consummate cruising capability, linked to the convenience and ease of use provided by the advanced automatic gearbox.

The self-shifting 3008 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9,5 seconds, and achieves a 202 km/h top speed. Combined-cycle fuel consumption comes to a frugal 7,7 litres/100 km, with associated CO2 emissions of 178 g/km.

As the designation suggest, the Premium specification level provides a comprehensive range of convenience, comfort and safety features.

Externally, the package includes front fog lamps and rear parking sensors, while automatic headlight activation, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and Follow-Me-Home lights are included, too. Handsome 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/50 R17 tyres are standard, as are colour-coded exterior mirrors and door handles.

Bi-Zone air-conditioning is standard, as is cruise control with a speed limiter, a trip computer, electrically operated windows all round, heated and electrically adjustable side mirrors, height adjustment for both front seats, and height and reach-adjustable steering with power assistance.

A sound system with front-loading CD and MP3-compatibility provides the audio delights, and can be accessed by the intuitive remote fingertip controls located on the steering column.

Premium-specific interior appointments are a bi-zone automatic climate control system, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror and Peugeot’s ‘USB Box’. The latter incorporates Bluetooth hands-free functionality for cellphones, and audio streaming from Bluetooth-enabled devices.

It also allows the connection of an iPod, MP3 player or USB storage device through the audio system, and can be accessed via the standard audio controls. Relevant audio information is shown on the 3008′s integrated multi-function display.

Standard fare on the safety front includes ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD and EBA, while Electronic Stability Programme with traction control is another stand-out feature in this segment.

Six airbags (dual front, side and full-length curtain airbags) are provided, together with a collapsible steering column, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, remote central locking, and a fully integrated anti-theft alarm and immobiliser.

The Peugeot 3008 Premium 1.6 THP Auto is already on sale through Peugeot SA’s national dealer network at a recommended retail price of R295 000. The price includes a five-year/90 000 km service plan, as well as a three-year/100 000 km warranty.

With the momentum of its one-two finish at Le Mans this time last year, Peugeot is hunting for a second straight win in the prestigious French competition. Twelve months of hard preparation since June 2009 have kept the team under pressure in its bid to secure a repeat success at this uniquely popular event which attracts more than 250,000 spectators annually.

The unknown, drama and potential pitfalls have always been part and parcel of the Le Mans 24 Hours, but the emotion and joy that come from winning the great French race is absolutely unique. When Peugeot had the privilege of tasting Le Mans success in 2009, it was able to measure the wave of passion its result prompted, both among the public and across the company. The victorious 908 HDi FAP and its three drivers – Alexander Wurz, Marc Gené and David Brabham – embarked almost immediately on a ‘lap of honour’ tour which lasted from June until September before the car finally made its way back to the team’s Vélizy workshops. Since then, with its sights set firmly on 2010, the year of Peugeot’s 200th anniversary celebrations, Team Peugeot Total hasn’t taken its eye off the ball in the slightest. Last January, the French carmaker released details of its new project which – in keeping with the brand’s new brand signature: Peugeot, MOTION & EMOTION – continues to put emotion at the heart of motoring, and motor sport has long been deeply rooted in Peugeot’s DNA.

Since the chequered flag came down on last year’s visit to Le Mans on June 14, 2009, the team’s preparations have taken the form of three races and 11 test sessions, including simulation runs, set-up work and the development of a complete range of tyres in association with Michelin. “Our work initially focused on adapting the 908 HDi FAP to the 2010 regulations, which essentially meant the engine and bodywork,” explains Peugeot Sport’s Technical Director, Bruno Famin. “The only aerodynamic change is the result of having to adjust to this year’s new engine power levels. We have endeavoured to recover some of the power lost because of the rule changes, which involved working with Bosch on combustion, combating energy losses through friction with Total and enhancing the flow efficiency of the intake and exhaust systems in association with Dow. All the things that gave us trouble in 2009 have been looked at, too, while we haven’t eased up in our ongoing efforts to improve reliability. This is the 908 HDi FAP’s fourth and final year of competition. It is an outstanding car and I think we can look forward to an incredibly thrilling Le Mans 24 Hours; I believe it will be very close from flag to flag.”

Peugeot Le Mans

The 1,000km de Spa-Francorchamps in May provided a foretaste of what spectators can expect at Le Mans, namely a long, unrelenting sprint during which the slightest error or misjudgement on the track, in the pits or in terms of strategy could well prove very costly. It was therefore deemed essential for the team to get in real-world race practice in order to give everyone a chance to rehearse their respective roles under the sort of pressure that only competitive action can provide. Last October’s 10-hour Petit Le Mans, March’s 12 Hours of Sebring and the recent 1,000km de Spa are all outings that have contributed to making Team Peugeot Total an even more mature operation, a process helped by its one-two finishes in all three races. To date, the 908 HDi FAP has carved out an exceptional record of 15 wins from 21 starts, including such classics as Le Mans, Sebring, Petit Le Mans, etc.

Since their return from Spa, the three factory 908 HDi FAPs have all been stripped, meticulously inspected and rebuilt ahead of scrutineering which will take place at Le Mans on Sunday, June 6. Meanwhile, the mechanics have been busy in the team’s Vélizy workshops practicing wheel changes and pit-work to ensure that they are prepared for all eventualities. “We also bedded in a certain number of parts for Le Mans at Magny-Cours,” adds Bruno Famin, “and a final shakedown run with the cars is planned at Satory, near Paris. When race week begins, we will use the early part of Wednesday and Thursday’s free and qualifying practice sessions to work on the set-ups of our three cars and to evaluate fuel consumption and tyre performance, while at the same time gathering as much of the indispensable data we will need for the weekend as possible. After Wednesday evening’s run, the engines will be changed in order to spare them for the race.”

“We see ourselves as the challengers again, despite last year’s win”

“Our win at Le Mans in 2009 did a great deal for the team’s confidence,” notes Peugeot Sport’s Director Olivier Quesnel. “This time last year, we had the impression that our backs were to the wall. Today, we are still under pressure, but we have used that pressure to make positive progress. Le Mans is the greatest race in the world and we all felt a big sense of pride when we succeeded in beating Audi which has been the benchmark in endurance racing for many years. We have done everything in our power to prepare as thoroughly as possible to repeat that win, but everyone is aware that this is a long race during which anything can happen. However much work you put in, it’s
Le Mans itself that decides who walks away with the trophy at the end. I am expecting an extremely intense race because I am sure that our main rival has evolved, as we saw at Spa. And we mustn’t overlook the other cars, either. The Aston Martins, for example, enjoy greater top speed compared with last year, and that can sometimes force our drivers to take risks when overtaking. This is our car’s fourth year of racing, so, in this respect, we see ourselves as the challengers again, despite last year’s win…”

In addition to its existing associations with Total, Michelin, Bosch, Dow, Eurodatacar, Peugeot Financement and BRM, Peugeot Sport will also boosted by support from PlayStation for the 78th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours.
