LIFESTYLE factors can contribute significantly to the dangers of vision loss and those at risk – especially people over 50 – should see an eye doctor regularly. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains a condition that is often little understood by even those who are at high risk of developing the disease, says Claudette Medefindt, director for science of Retina South Africa. In South Africa, AMD affects thousands of people every year and between 200000 and 500000 may be affected by deteriorating vision as a result.
