www.MyPE.co.za: Below
is the copy of a letter from Ward 5 Councillor, Jeremy Davis to Deputy
Mayor Nancy Sihlwayi, Executive Mayor Xanoxolo Wayile and Acting
Municipal Manager Elias Ntoba.

Dear Madam,

POSTPONEMENT OF HERITAGE
TASK TEAM MEETING SCHEDULED FOR 3 SEPTEMBER 2010

With all due respect I request an explanation for the continued
cancellation and postponements of our Task Team meetings. The Task Team
should be playing a major and important roll in protecting our city
from the negative impact problem buildings are creating in our midst.
The Mayor obviously had good intentions when appointing this task team
but has failed to monitor its lack of progress. Meanwhile buildings
continue to be neglected and furthermore, illegal so called “essential
repairs” are being carried out on the Baakens Street buildings with no
action in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act 1999 being taken
by the Metro.

I ask that the important and effective impact that this task team could
have on the protection of our heritage buildings be recognised by you
and other members of this team. I, as a member of the Task Team am
deeply disturbed by the lack of concern you show in carrying out our
obligations in light of our accountability to the residents of the
Metro. I have on numerous occasions included the protection of our
Heritage in the Red Location, all to no avail!!

I must also question the delay in promulgating the Problem Building
By-Law by the ruling party for no apparent reason.

I look forward to receiving your response to this letter with some sort
of explanation for the shortcomings I have highlighted.

Yours sincerely,

CLLR JEREMY DAVIS

www.MyPE.co.za:
Volkswagen Group South Africa Managing Director, David Powels, attended
the reading of the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP2) Bill by the
Portfolio Committee in Parliament on Thursday. The revised plan is
aimed at driving growth in the industrial sector – which is seen as a
job creator and development driver.

Joanmariae Fubbs,
chairperson of the Trade and Industry IPAP Portfolio
Committee, says the industrial plan is a radical shift in policy which
aims to grow a developmental economy by taking deliberate decisions to
ensure investment targets the economy’s production sectors. The plan
aims to “arrest the decline in manufacturing …. and place South
Africa on a new developmental growth path.”

The plan focuses specifically on the car manufacturing sector and has
created major provisions and incentives for the industry under the
Automotive Production and Development Programme. Under the programme,
which will take effect in 2013, the Automotive Investment Scheme will
provide qualifying firms with a taxable cash grant of up to 30% of the
value of investment in production assets.

The Committee praised Volkswagen Group SA for its local content
strategy plan, particularly in relation to its Polo Vivo, which is
built by South Africans – for South Africans. Polo Vivo local content
exceeds 70% – up from levels of below 40% at the same time last year.

www.MyPE.co.za: At
approximately 2:15 p.m. this afternoon, Monday 6 September 2010,
Timothy Abrahams, was exiting
the Baakens Street gate in the Port Elizabeth Harbour driving his
Hyundai Bakkie.

The security guards raised the boom and lowered the road spikes for
Timothy to exit the harbour. 15 metres further on a Transnet
Train
ploughed into his vehicle as it approached obliquely from his rear left
quarter and pushed his vehicle for 20 metres before spitting it out on
the LHS of the train, with the bakkie overturned onto the driver’s side
and now facing the Baakens Entrance. (See: Image of Timothy pointing
out point of impact).

Whilst Timothy was being pushed by the train he was desperately tring
to smash the front windscreen open with his right elbow in an attempt
to escape the possibility of being crushed by the train as it slowly
came to a halt.

Lucky to be alive, Timothy escaped with lacerations to his right arm
and minor cuts to his hands.

Timothy is sure that he did not see a guard with a flag walking in
front of the lone train engine and assumed that all was clear when the
Baakens Valley Entrance security guards opened the boom and spikes for
him to proceed. He says he heard hooting and then the crunch of the
train hitting his vehicle.

Timothy was scheduled to return to the harbour later to load fish to be
transported to the Free State.

Attempts to get the Supervisor from Protea
Coin Security to tell MyPE
what the standing order for the security guards is when a train is
observed to be coming up the tracks were met with refusal to talk and
requests to “go to the scene of the accident rather”.

Employees of Commercial
Marine expressed concern that their customers,
on exiting Commercial Marine parking, exited straight into the middle
of the danger area and did not enjoy the protection of a boom. Close
observation reveals that the only boom protecting traffic exiting the
harbour at the Baakens Valley entrance is controlled by the security
guards.

There is no boom in front of the train tracks when approaching the
Baakens Valley Entrance and the flashing warning lights at the exit are
partially obscured by the pallisade fence and signage. Proceed with
caution.

www.MyPE.co.za: When
photographer Liezel Barrow approached the organisers of the Nashua
Largest Ever Bikini Photo Shoot about becoming the official image
taker, it was more than a professional decision it was a deeply
personal one.

As the official event
photographer, Barrow will capture the Guinness World Record
attempt at the Nelson
Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, October 23, in
aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Barrow was motivated to get involved by the loss of close friend
Antoinette van Mazijk to breast cancer and her own brush with cervical
cancer.

Her business, Pro-Design
Photographers, was dreamed up by herself and
Van Mazijk during their student days at PE Technikon (now NMMU).
Although Van Mazijk never formally joined the business, Barrow decided
to keep the name for sentimental reasons.

“We always had a lot of fun and shared good times and lots of
laughter,” smiled Barrow. “I miss that.”

In 2003, Van Mazijk discovered a lump in her breast while working on a
cruise ship to raise money for their fledgling business.

She returned home, received chemotherapy and was in remission for six
months before it was discovered in October 2004 that the cancer had
spread to her bones. Van Mazijk passed away peacefully during a
chemotherapy session in 2005, aged 25.

“She was feisty till the end,” noted their mutual friend and recent
addition to the team, Tracey Anderson. Barrow agreed, saying, “We never
treated her like she was ill.”

When Van Mazijk decided to shave her head before starting chemotherapy,
the friends turned it into a party and took photographs to record the
event.

After the cancer returned, she asked Barrow, Anderson and make-up
artist Marika de Groot to use their combined skills to capture her
essence with a glamorous photo shoot.

“Antoinette wanted to say: ‘There’s more to me than this disease’,”
commented Barrow.

Relating this to the Largest Ever Bikini Photo Shoot, Barrow encouraged
women of all ages, shapes and sizes to enter.

The organisers, Club 100 For Ladies, are hoping to assemble 2 000
participants to break the current world record of 1 923, which was set
in the Russian seaside resort of Sochi two years ago.

“I think it would be great if some ladies who have had cancer would
come forward and be a part of it.

“It would also be fantastic if under-18s get involved (with parental
consent) – it’s important for younger girls to be aware of cancer and
to get themselves checked.”

Barrow specialises in studio and pageant photography and is fully
equipped to cover larger events, but admits photographing a crowd of 2
000 bikini-clad women will be an unusual challenge.

“Because it’s early in the morning (8:00 am), I will have to check the
weather and lighting conditions closer to the time.”

To stand a better chance of getting a good photo, Barrow may have to
climb up high into the stadium and shoot from above with a powerful
zoom lens or position the participants in the stands and shoot from
below.

As a woman, she is also less likely to be distracted by the subject
matter than her male counterparts. “This is not about being sexy – this
is about doing it for a good cause,” she remarked.

Barrow has done photographic shoots for a variety of charitable
organisations, including MTR Smit Children’s Haven and Reach for a
Dream, but this particular cause lies very close to her heart.

deeply moving “loop-de-loop” play about life, love and laughter.

Trapped in dull marriage and reduced to talking to the kitchen wall for
companionship, Shirley wonders how she let her life turn into …this.
When a friend offers her a ticket to Greece, and a chance to escape her
tedious existence, she is forced to find out if the gutsy girl she once
was is still in there somewhere…

In her inimitable way, this lovable Liverpudlian housewife takes us on
a journey through her sassy youth (“I wore me skirt so short you woulda
thought it was a serviette.”) to the gradual decay of her marriage, and
her loss of self confidence. The audience will alternate between tears
of laughter and moments of poignant introspection, as Shirley
rediscovers her zest for life “in a country where the grape is grown.”

For anyone who feels like a middle-aged cliché; for anyone who sees
him – or herself heading for a life that’s “like Sainsbury’s -
overrated”; for anyone who has ever asked the question, “What happened
to ME?”, this show will probe those sore points and thwack those funny
bones mercilessly!

The considerable talents of director Greg Everard, lighting guru David
Whitehouse, and performer Niqui Cloete-Barrass combine to present a
truly professional and exciting theatre experience that’s not to be
missed.

SHIRLEY VALENTINE runs from the Wednesday the 22nd to Saturday the 25th
of September at the PEMADS
Little Theatre in Belmont Terrace. Tickets
are available from Computicket
like the Middle East – there’s no solution.”)
Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:

An inter-leading door, installed at a business in Marine Drive,
Schoenmakerskop, saved the owner from a nasty burglary at 01h45 on
Wednesday last week.

The burglars forced open the kitchen door as well as the security
sliding gate. Just as they thought they had struck it lucky, they were
met by another barrier, the locked inter-leading door.

The criminals did not succeed breaking through the third door and
rather fled the scene before getting caught.

The owner opted not to open a case with the police as no loss was
suffered.

Why must we open
cases?
It is common knowledge that as little as one in every four crimes is
reported, because people have lost faith in the criminal justice
system. A normal theft case can take up to eight months before a trial
date is set. The SAPS determines manpower and the necessary resources
that need to be allocated to specific police stations, based on the
crime that is reported in that specific area. At the end of the day,
crime statistics will stay the same and the chance of arresting
criminals becomes smaller if crimes aren’t reported.

A concerning fact is that some complainants do not report or register a
case against these criminals after they have reported to us that there
has been a violation, or we have responded to their alarm activation
and caught the perpetrator. It is imperative that you register a case
against suspects! An attempt to commit a crime is “punishable by law”
as if the crime has occurred. Every time an incident of crime is not
registered, another criminal is set free to continue practising crime.

ATLAS Officers arrest
brazen thief during midmorning burglary

ATLAS Response Officers were despatched to a theft in progress at 10h17
on Friday morning, when a suspect was still inside the business
gathering his loot.

The thug entered the building during office hours while the employees
were busy with their daily tasks. The police were called for backup,
although the Officers decided to enter the building in the mean time.

As they approached the building, they could hear shuffling noises
coming from inside. They found the suspect inside the office getting
ready to flee with his loot. They struggled to apprehend the thug who
resisted arrest.

The owner opened a case of theft with the police.

ATLAS Officers track down
and arrest Kabega Park burglars

A Cape Road, Kabega Park homeowner almost became the victim of a
burglary at around 19h30 on Monday evening.

The female homeowner was alone at home at the time and heard banging
noises coming from her kitchen. As she walked into the kitchen she saw
suspects trying to break through her kitchen window.

She got the fright of her life, panicked and quickly phoned ATLAS to
respond to her emergency. The thugs immediately fled the scene as they
did not want to get caught.

Luckily the woman managed to take a good look at the criminals and
supplied the Response Officers with a description.

The Officers gave chase and found four suspicious men walking in the
street with a shovel and other stolen items. The homeowner positively
identified the suspects and they were taken away by the police.

A case was opened with the police who will investigate.

Midmorning arrest by
ATLAS and Richmond Hill Crime Forum members

Alan, Chairman of Richmond Hill Crime, writes:
“Earlier this morning, as one of our resident neighbourhood watch
members was passing Milly’s, he heard an alarm going off in Sherlock
and spotted an ATLAS vehicle approaching the scene. He took the front
and ATLAS went into Petersen Lane, where the suspect was spotted.

Seconds later an arrest was made and once again our Capt & co
was in close proximity to take control of the situation. Another
demonstration of the co-operation between the various security forces
active in Richmond Hill at the moment.

But everything just somehow keeps going right. Still lots of
walk-a-bouts so keep them eyes open.”

Alan, Chairman of Richmond Hill Crime, writes again:

“This letter of appreciation came from the people involved with the
following request. please keep and eye out there as we have had a few
incidents in that area lately.”

“I just want to add to your e-mail, as we were the unlucky couple of
the break-in. To all involved – ATLAS, SAPS, n/h watch members (wish I
had all the names!) and yourself -a much appreciated thank you! I know
a thank you sometimes seems like just a formality, but this one is
loaded with sincerity!

Our house is not quite secured yet (because everyone is not “flash
gordon” like the above mentioned folks!) so, if any one passes Sherlock
or Petersen lane – please keep your eyes and ears open. Once again- A
MUCH APPRECIATED & GRATEFUL THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED! And
I have just had a call about 2 chaps posing as Vodacom specialists in
Irvine Street. Don’t open your gate to strangers without some sort of
identification, or if you are not sure, rather phone me or Capt.
Ackerman.
