We view development as ‘removing unfreedoms’ (Sen, 1999), rather than imposing Western culture or ideals. Thus, we trust local people to determine how we can help them, embodying a highly participatory ethic to our business.

We are based in Zambia, where the BUSHBARROWS are locally manufactured and distributed. Currently, we are working on setting up a large-scale manufacturing operation in South Africa, where we will create a second base for our organization. Soon, we look forward to expanding our reach to other countries in the region.

If you are located in a country other than Zambia, and are interested in our organization, please contact us to get involved.

The Bush Barrow was collaboratively designed with small-scale Zambian farmers in a rural community over a three-year period.

With a payload of up to 250 kg, Bush Barrows are specif- ically engineered to move heavy loads over long distances in harsh environments.

People of all ages and genders can operate Bush Barrows.

Jobs get done faster since people can carry up to 10X more with a Bush Barrow.

A versatile design allows the Bush Barrow to help solve a variety of mobility problems for millions of people throughout Africa and beyond.

We offer a range of model options so Bush Barrows can be owned and operated by small-scale farmers with a low annual income.

We work directly with end-users on the ground, as well as larger organizations who align with our mission that are interested in implementing or piloting our product.

In 2018, Adam Lyman and Allan Mwango started a design project with the goal of developing simple technology to help small farmers, but doing so in a completely bottom-up fashion. Their idea was to work directly with local people in Allan’s village to let them decide what problem to work on, collaboratively design technology to address it. For three months, Adam lived in a tent outside Allan’s house and working with farmers in their fields to learn local ways of doing things and to build relationships. Next, Adam and Allan formed a collaborative design group with farmers in Allan’s village, and worked with them for three years to a) identify a problem to work on, b) co-design and test potential solutions (prototypes) to address that problem, and c) come up with a final prototype that worked the best.

By the end of the project, people throughout the village were using the prototypes every day for collecting water, producing their crops and building their houses. The group’s design had become an essential tool that people were immediately attracted to. People driving past the village would stop and ask about the wheelbarrows, and some even bought prototype models on the spot. Allan and Adam saw how important the wheelbarrows were and decided to start an organization dedicated to making the wheelbarrows available at scale, to help make life easier for people in similar situations.

[2
6383
6382,6381
6384
post-2250","at_biz_dir","type-at_biz_dir","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","atbdp_listing_types-general","at_biz_dir-category-social-enterprise","at_biz_dir-location-kasama","at_biz_dir-location-zambia","at_biz_dir-tags-bush-barrow","entry
["GET
