The Cape Town studio prints limited editions by hand from prepared limestone, from monochrome to multi-stone colour, signed, numbered and archivally packed.
CAPE TOWN, South Africa – Every colour in a stone lithograph needs its own stone and its own pass through the press. That makes the process slow, and it is the reason collectors pay attention to it. Lithography Art, a fine-art stone lithography studio in Woodstock, has now listed its limited edition prints for collectors, interior buyers and people looking for a gift that will last.
How the prints are made
The image is drawn or worked onto a prepared limestone with greasy materials, then fixed chemically so that ink takes only on the drawn marks while the damp stone repels it everywhere else. Each sheet is pulled by hand. Press pressure, paper dampness and the state of the stone all change the result, so the printers check every stage from first proof to final impression.
“A monochrome stone can carry an enormous range of greys if the drawing is right,” said Lindiwe Ndlovu, the studio’s master printer. “We’d rather proof three or four times and get the blacks to sit properly than rush an edition. Once a sheet is signed and numbered, that’s the record.”
The edition range
Editions run from monochrome black-and-grey work through two-colour and three-colour prints to full-colour images built from several stones in register. The catalogue is also grouped by subject, with portrait, landscape, botanical, architectural, figurative and abstract lithographs, and by format, from small-scale and interior-sized sheets to wide, vertical and large-scale prints. Collectors can choose deckle-edge prints, hand-tinted prints, artist proof sets, trial proof portfolios that show an image developing, folio box sets, and framed or unframed collector prints.
For artists planning an edition
Artists can bring a project to the studio for edition planning, stone preparation, colour separation, proofing sessions, paper selection, editioning, signing and numbering, and archival packing for collection or courier. Framing is coordinated for collectors who want the piece ready to hang.
The studio works with artists and collectors in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban and delivers nationwide. Details and the enquiry form are on the Lithography Art website.
