Boston Bruins vs. Buffalo Sabres Series History

Since the Buffalo Sabres debuted in the NHL in the 1970-1971 season, they have had to deal with the “Big, Bad Bruins.” Starting together in the East Division, the rivalry continued as they were placed in the Adam’s Division, later renamed the Atlantic Division, in 1974. The early seasons for the Bruins-Sabres rivalry were less intense than they became; however, one standout moment of contention occurred in 1972 when the Sabres’ Jim Schoenfeld collided with the Bruins’ Wayne Cashman through the Zamboni doors, leading both teams to brawl while Schoenfeld and Cashman battled off-ice.

The rivalry intensified during the ’80s and ’90s playoff games. Boston defeated Buffalo in their first five matchups in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, in 1982, 1983, 1988, 1989 and 1992. The Sabres countered with a four-game sweep in the 1993 Stanley Cup Playoffs, concluding with the historic “May Day” overtime goal by the Sabres’ Brad May. The teams split their next two meetings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the Sabres winning the 1999 Eastern Conference semifinals and the Bruins winning the 2010 first round.

Another key moment in the Bruins-Sabres rivalry came during the 2011 regular season when Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins hit Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller outside of the crease while chasing the puck. After a short-lived brawl resulted from the hit, Lucic received a penalty and Miller left the game with a concussion. Given the well-known but unwritten rule of hockey that the goalie of either team is essentially off-limits, the contact was a clear violation and further escalated the rivalry.

For the 2025-2026 NHL season, Buffalo snapped their 14-year postseason drought by clinching the top seed in the Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, the Bruins qualified through the Eastern Conference Wild Card, setting the stage for the two rivals to meet in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Heading into the 2026 postseason, the Bruins lead the Sabres in the rivalry’s overall regular season record, 162-118-29-14, as well as their overall postseason series, 6-2, with a 25-20 game record.
