The 3rd edition of the Ocean Festival Lifesaving Carnival will take over Scottburgh Main Beach on Friday, 1 May 2026 as a key sporting event that makes up the Ocean Festival programme.<\/p>\n

As lifesaving continues to grow in popularity along the KZN South Coast, the Ocean Festival Lifesaving Carnival is playing an increasingly important role in bringing aspirational racing to local shores, inspiring the next generation of ocean athletes while giving established competitors the chance to perform in front of a home crowd.<\/p>\n

Boost for Local Lifesaving<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLifesaving in Scottburgh has really thrived over the past few years, and we believe the Ocean Festival has played a role in that growth,\u201d says Barry Lewin, Event Organiser. \u201cBy bringing racing into the town, we\u2019re showcasing the sport to both spectators and athletes, while giving local competitors \u2013 who usually have to travel to provincial and national events \u2013 the opportunity to compete at home and share that experience with their community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club has established itself as one of the top nipper clubs in the province, with strong growth in participation and an increasing number of medals returning from regional and national championships. The Ocean Festival Lifesaving Carnival offers these athletes \u2013 across Nipper, Junior, Senior, and Masters divisions \u2013 a valuable opportunity to test their skills in real race conditions, competing in disciplines including run, swim, board, ski, flags, and the ever-popular dash for cash.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the interprovincial championships taking place on 2 and 3 May in KZN, we\u2019re also expecting some out-of-province competitors, which adds another level of excitement and competition,\u201d adds Lewin. \u201cScottburgh is an incredible location to compete as the natural features of the coastline create exciting racing conditions, while the surrounding Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area emphasises the importance of preserving these spaces. It\u2019s a thrilling environment for athletes and a great spectacle for spectators.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewin says this is a chance to celebrate the ocean and change the conversation about how humanity engages with this natural asset: \u201cThe lifesaving carnival is a perfect example as it brings together athletes, families, and the wider community in a shared appreciation of the ocean and the opportunities it provides.\u201d<\/p>\n
