Africa Is Not the Next Frontier — It’s the Blueprint: Rethinking Innovation on Africa Day

By Yi He, Co-Founder of Binance (www.Binance.com)

Each year, Africa Day serves as a celebration of the continent's culture, history, and progress. But in 2025, Africa is doing more than celebrating — it's leading.

For too long, Africa has been positioned as a “frontier market,” a place waiting to catch up. That narrative is outdated. Africa is not waiting to be included. It is already setting the pace, through innovation born out of necessity, creativity rooted in culture, and progress driven by community.

At Binance, we've witnessed firsthand how innovation looks different in Africa. It doesn't always begin in formal boardrooms or with multi-million-dollar funding rounds. It often starts in WhatsApp groups, community meet-ups, and with side-hustlers using their mobile phones to build. It's a bottom-up revolution shaped by real-world needs.

Take Mary Usaji, a developer and project manager at ICP Hub Kenya. After being scammed, she turned to blockchain not as a buzzword, but as a tool. With support from platforms like Binance, Mary educated herself, rebuilt her confidence, and now leads blockchain development training for others. Her story is not just one of recovery, but of leadership — and it reflects a larger movement led by African women who are redefining the tech landscape.

There's also Emmanuel, a Web3 content creator and crypto influencer. His journey into the world of cryptocurrency began in 2014 when he launched his first eCommerce store. Faced with the challenge of integrating payment gateways, Emmanuel discovered Bitcoin, which offered a borderless solution for receiving payments from anywhere in the world. This discovery changed the way he handled business and finances, opening up new possibilities in investment and payment systems. By embracing crypto, Emmanuel became part of a larger movement of entrepreneurs revolutionizing their industries. His story is one of growth, financial literacy, and a mindset of continuous learning, embodying the transformative power of cryptocurrency for business and personal empowerment.

Or Chris Howard, the founder of Story, a premium marketplace for sneakers and collectables in Cape Town. His passion for sneakers turned into a thriving business that not only caters to sneakerheads but also embraces new technologies. By adopting cryptocurrency payments through Binance Pay, Chris made transactions smoother for his customers, allowing them to use cryptocurrency as a mainstream payment method. His story is one of adaptability and growth, and it reflects a wider trend where African entrepreneurs are embracing innovation to elevate their businesses and create unique experiences.

Innovation in Africa isn't theoretical. It's practical, tested daily against the pressures of currency instability, unreliable power, and low-trust systems. These are the conditions where bold ideas are stress-tested, and where blockchain technology has found meaningful, everyday applications.

While many countries debate blockchain regulation, several African communities are already using it to solve pressing problems. Stablecoins are powering cross-border payments for families and small businesses. NFTs are being used for digital identity and authenticating African art. Smart contracts are making community projects more transparent and accountable.

This isn't leapfrogging, it's building better from the start. And it's not happening on the margins. It's shaping global thinking on what sustainable, inclusive innovation looks like.

Africa Day is more than a cultural celebration. It's a call to pay attention — because what's happening here is a preview of where the world is going. Africa is showing that resilience, community trust, and resourcefulness are not traits to overcome — they are competitive advantages.

At Binance, we're not just investing in Africa; we're learning from it. Through community education, partnerships, and local capacity-building, we are committed to supporting this growth from the ground up. We believe innovation should be accessible, inclusive, and adapted to local realities, and there is no better place to demonstrate this than Africa.

To date, our work through Binance Charity (https://apo-opa.co/4myVTcW) and Binance Academy (https://apo-opa.co/4myVTcW) has supported women in over 10 countries, including South Africa and Kenya, with blockchain education, mentorship, and scholarships. These programs aren't about charity; they're about unlocking talent and empowering long-term participation in the digital economy.

The world once called Africa an “emerging market.” But emergence implies something that's still in progress. That no longer applies. Africa has emerged — not only as a user of innovation but as its architect.

On this Africa Day, let's move beyond outdated narratives. Africa isn't just part of the future — it's building it. And for those paying attention, it's clear: the rest of the world would be wise to follow its blueprint.

VC4A Connects Funders of Africa’s Startup Success at Africa Early Stage Investor Summit (AESIS2024)

Location: News
VC4A

Over 300 Africa-focused delegates converged at the 11th edition of the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, and filled up the room for the AESIS Deal Morning ready to engage with Africa's most promising founders. Next to another 15 highly promising startups, VC4A (www.VC4A.com) hosted eight female entrepreneurs from IFC's She Wins Africa program, who took the AESIS2024 stage to pitch their solutions after completing an intensive technical residency in Cape Town. The energy was palpable, reflecting the increasing investor appetite for ventures that not only deliver commercial success but also drive meaningful impact across the continent.

In the opening remarks of AESIS - which took place from the 28th to the 29th of November with the theme “Pioneering Pathways: Innovating Investment Mobilization in Africa” - VC4A CEO Vincent Hoogduijn set the tone for the two-day event. “Why does VC4A organize AESIS every year? The answer is simple - we are here to unite the African early stage investment ecosystem".

The conversations, panels, pitches and ‘investor experiences' resonated deeply with the theme, as a strong call for collaboration not only within the investor community but also from hubs and accelerators, angel groups and venture studios as well as entrepreneurs themselves.

Summing up what was a momentous event, here are the key highlights:

Day 1:

  1. Deep Dive Sessions: The discussions focused on the shifting dynamics of the African ecosystem, particularly around capital market policies, collaborations, and pipeline building. A key takeaway was the need for cross-border collaborations and the role of tech-driven platforms in streamlining the investment process. As Fridah Ntarangwi of Zidi Circle highlighted in the Collaborations and Partnerships panel, "Having functional tech-driven platforms to simplify the investment process, powered by AI and blockchain technology, is key for the ecosystem."
  2. Investor Experiences: An exclusive series of partner-hosted events to close Day 1 of AESIS2024, provided unique and casual style networking opportunities, to promote connections between investors, entrepreneurs, and leaders of industry. Partners include IFC, GIZ-SAIS, FMO Ventures, Lofty Inc Capital, TLCom Capital, Crypto Asset Investment Fund (CAIF), Digital Africa, ENZA Capital, Disraptors and Breega. The relaxed atmosphere facilitated meaningful conversations, affording the opportunity for long-term partnerships and friendships to be built.

Day 2:

  1. Deal Morning: 23 promising portfolio companies (https://apo-opa.co/3ZLzcIY) from 6 organizations - DEG Impulse: develoPPP Ventures, Digital Africa: Fuzé, Ennovate Ventures: TheNextFund, IFC: She Wins Africa, Open Startup and GIZ: SAIS program, pitched their innovative solutions to an audience of investors. The high caliber of startups and the strategic insights shared by the judges created a launchpad moment for the future of the African startup ecosystem, showcasing innovative and impactful solutions to real problems
  2. The Partner Series: Keeping momentum of the power-packed first day, the partner series held segments on Capital Mobilization, Gender Lens and Impact. Taking an apt quote from closing remarks by Thomas van Halen, Director of Investor Services at VC4A “The evolution of the African startup ecosystem reflects the growing maturity of the market, but also highlights the need for innovative and flexible exit mechanisms to meet the diverse needs of founders, investors, and funds.”

Inspiring quotes from AESIS2024

“Entrepreneurs are the architects of Africa's success” said Phuti Mahanyele-Dabengwa, the South Africa CEO, Naspers, and the AESIS2024 Guest of Honour who delivered the moving keynote on Day 1.

Anne Kabugi, Regional Gender Lead at IFC, opening the Venture Showcase - She Wins Africa pitches, tasked the delegates with a question, a food for thought: "What if I told you that Africa's food crisis is going to be solved by women?”

Nicola Tyler of The Thinking Company delivered a welcome on Day 2's Deal Morning, charging the audience with a stand out statement: “Africa is not the biggest problem in the world, it is the biggest opportunity”.

Kenza Lahlou of Outlierz Ventures shared on the Global Development Funding Panel “The role of DFIs is not to be there forever but to provide the investments that work and exit.”

Closing out at the inaugural Awards Ceremony of the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, Tomi Davies received a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' for his decades of commitment to promote angel investing in Africa. He delivered a moving speech with all ears listening raptly as he concluded ”Africa's youth population is the best source to build Africa's infrastructure.”

In a statement that perfectly sums up the experience of co-hosting this edition: “AESIS2024 once again pointed out that collaboration is a must,” said Vincent Hoogduijn. “It's been a tough year and we all need to work together to overcome the challenges ahead. Persistence, resilience and adaptability will be key ingredients to see the ecosystem thrive - go fast alone, go far together”

VC4A is grateful for the opportunity to serve the ecosystem as a platform to connect, inspire, and empower. Looking ahead, the collective efforts of investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers will be essential to unlocking Africa's full potential and driving its economic growth. VC4A's commitment is to continue to unite Africa's startup ecosystems. Together with co-hosts ABAN, VC4A looks forward to reconnecting with old and new friends at AESIS2025 next year.

Call to declare crypto assets with SARS

Location: News

Call to declare crypto assets with SARS

The South African Revenue Service has encouraged taxpayers with various digital currencies, which includes crypto assets, to declare these with its Voluntary Disclosure Programme (VDP) to facilitate compliance.

This comes as the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has noted the phenomenal growth in the use of various digital currencies by many South Africans.

Prominent amongst these is the prevalence of crypto assets. A staggering number of more than 5.8 million South Africans hold a crypto asset, with Southern Africa boasting the largest uptake of Bitcoin in the world.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter once more reminded taxpayers to honestly and dutifully honour their legal obligations by declaring all their income.

“SARS has been working ceaselessly to ensure compliance by all taxpayers, and those who are evading their responsibility make the burden of compliance difficult for compliant taxpayers.

“This is not only unfair to honest taxpayers but affects the vulnerable in society disproportionately by limiting the state’s ability to deliver social grants and other much needed social benefits.

“Let all know that technology has enhanced SARS’ ability to root out non-compliant taxpayers. Be warned, SARS will pursue all without fear, favour or prejudice,” the Commissioner said on Wednesday.

SARS is legally obligated to account for any income or assets held by taxpayers and had previously invited crypto exchanges and those involved in trading or holding crypto assets to disclose related activities on a voluntary basis.

“As a follow up, SARS will be including crypto assets into its compliance programmes. Consequently, SARS is engaging with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) regarding the provision of information on registered Crypto Asset Service Providers (CASPs). SARS is also receiving information directly from the local exchanges.

“Importantly, it must be underscored that through multilateral agreements SARS is exchanging information with other tax authorities globally,” SARS said.

The provision of offshore crypto accounts will be the subject of a multilateral agreement to be signed by Ministers of Finance in November 2024, which will catalyse the cross jurisdictional exchange of such information in respect of South African taxpayers.

“SARS believes that most taxpayers and traders are honest and that they expect to be assisted to fulfil their legal obligations. Pursuant to our legal mandate, SARS provides certainty and clarity about all legal obligations for taxpayers and traders.

“SARS is also working assiduously to make it easy and simple for taxpayers and traders to seamlessly comply with their obligations.

“Critically, it is our strategic objective to make it hard and costly for those who are willfully non-compliant. These efforts are intended to support our Strategic Intent of fostering a culture of voluntary compliance,” SARS said.

Resultantly, in addressing crypto compliance SARS is increasing capability in its audit teams to support enforcement initiatives.

SARS has resorted to greater use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and algorithms to process its work.

“In implementing our mandate, SARS has recently issued query letters to taxpayers with crypto assets. These letters aim to gain an insight into taxpayers’ investment in crypto assets and the trades undertaken to enable SARS to assess taxpayers’ compliance in this regard,” the revenue service said.

SARS warned taxpayers that the VDP, which facilitates compliance, has strict conditions.

“One being that taxpayers must approach SARS first. Once SARS has identified the taxpayer for audit, they are precluded from applying for the VDP,” the revenue service said.  -SAnews.gov.za

From Spy Trojans to Ransomware: Cyberthreats industrial organisations in Africa should be aware of

Location: News
Kaspersky

According to Kaspersky (www.Kaspersky.co.za) statistics, in the first quarter of 2024, the percentage of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) computers globally on which malicious objects were blocked decreased by 1.3 percentage points (pp) from the first quarter of the previous year - to 24.4%. In Africa the amount of malware remained almost unchanged, on a level much higher compared to other regions - 32.4% of ICS computers in Africa faced cyberthreats in the first quarter of 2024. In South Africa the figures are 23.5% in Q1 2023 and 25.5% in Q1 2024, Kenya – 28.1% and 30.5%, while in Nigeria – the figures grew from 25.3% to 28%.

In the first quarter of 2024, Kaspersky's protection solutions blocked malware from 10,865 different malware families of various categories on industrial automation systems. The African region is over-exposed to threats spreading via the Internet, which are the most common initial-access tools for cyber attackers. The region also leads in charts of malware spread via removable devices (5.6% of ICS computers faced it, compared to the global figure of 1.13%), which is the other way for cyber attackers to try to bypass the safeguards at the perimeter and to spread within the internal infrastructure.

Malicious objects that are used for initial infection of computers include dangerous Internet resources that are added to denylists (this threat was blocked on 8.78% of ICS computers in Africa), malicious scripts and phishing pages (6.9%), and malicious documents (1.83%). These malicious objects are normally used at the initial phases of the attack chain. As a result, they are blocked by security solutions more often than everything else. This is normally reflected in Kaspersky Security Network statistics.

Malicious objects used to initially infect computers deliver next-stage malware – spyware, ransomware, and miners – to victims' computers. Spyware (Trojan-Spy malware, backdoors and keyloggers), which is mostly used to steal money or confidential data, is also widespread both globally and in Africa (blocked on 6.65% of ICS computers in Africa).

Worms and viruses are types of self-propagating malware. To spread across ICS networks, viruses and worms rely on removable media, network folders, infected files including backups, and network attacks on outdated software. This type of malware is very active in African countries compared to other regions and global average. Extremely high rates of self-propagating malware in the region most probably mean there's a significant portion of OT infrastructure yet to be protected by security solutions (which is where the malware continuously spreads from) and there's room for improving the overall cybersecurity culture to follow strict cybersecurity policies.

ICS computers in Africa continue to face covert crypto-mining programs - miners in the form of executable files for Windows and web miners, though this type of malware is decreasing in the recent years. If successfully installed these provide cybercriminals steady earnings from using victim's computer processing power.

Since AutoCAD software is widely used in ICS organisations, cybercriminals also try to make use of this and similar programs creating special malware, detection of which increased in the first quarter of 2024 compared to previous quarters.

The Middle East and Africa lead among regions where ransomware is spread; though not high in numbers (0.28% and 0.27% of ICS computers faced these respectfully), this may pose serious risk to organisations, especially if data encryption scenario is selected by cybercriminals.

“Africa is actively integrating technologies, but it's important to keep cybersecurity in mind and apply it to both new technologies and currently used solutions. By a security mindset we mean implementing reliable solutions, setting up security policies and educating employees depending on their level of relation with OT. This applies to all infrastructures, but is especially important in operational technology, where risks of material consequences are very high and impact on safety is possible. We hope organisations in Africa will set the stage in the region for a future where technology and security go hand in hand,” says Evgeny Goncharov, Head of Kaspersky's ICS Cyber Emergency Response Team.

To keep ICS computers protected from various threats, Kaspersky experts recommend:

  • Using security solutions for operation technology endpoints and networks, such as Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity (http://apo-opa.co/4e0oN1a) to ensure comprehensive protection for all industry critical systems.
  • Regularly updating operating systems and application software that are part of the enterprise's industrial network. Apply security fixes and patches to ICS network equipment as soon as they are available.
  • Conducting regular security audits of operation technology networks to identify and eliminate security issues.
  • Undertaking dedicated ICS security training for IT security teams and OT engineers, which is crucial to improve responses to new and advanced malicious techniques.
  • Using ICS network traffic monitoring, analysis and detection solutions for better protection from attacks potentially threatening technological processes and main enterprise assets.
  • Protect IT infrastructure using solutions for timely detection of cyberthreats, investigation, and effective remediation of incidents, such as Kaspersky Next (http://apo-opa.co/3KoMxhU).
  • Providing the security team responsible for protecting industrial control systems with up-to-date threat intelligence. ICS Threat Intelligence (http://apo-opa.co/3wWHamS) Reporting service provides insights into current threats and attack vectors, as well as the most vulnerable elements in OT and industrial control systems and how to mitigate them.

A full report on ICS threats in the first quarter of 2024 is available at ICS CERT website (http://apo-opa.co/3KnQUtu).

Industrial cybersecurity is one of the main topics being discussed by Kaspersky experts at GITEX Africa in Morocco, on 29-31 May 2024.
