The South African defence industry and its costly contradiction – DefenceWeb | SA News

South Africa’s defence industry is a story marred by contradiction. On one hand, private manufacturers like Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) are capable of securing billions in export orders and reinvesting heavily in local production. While on the other hand, state-owned Denel remains a governance black hole, and the national arms-control bureaucracy in the form of the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC) has become an obstacle rather than an enabler.

The result is a sector that punches above its weight globally while being systematically undermined at home, hampering South Africa’s ability to compete and remain a competitive and ethical supplier of arms…
