10 Days Later And Still No Arrests

13 July 2023 by Alan

Dear Editor

  • The fact that none of the Blue Light Bullies have been arrested raises concerns about fairness and justice.
  • Police Minister Bheki Cele must take immediate action, including announcing the arrest of the attackers, to address the public’s demand for transparency and swift justice.
  • There is a great need for accountability. Internal disciplinary processes within SAPS are insufficient in this case.

Today marks the tenth day since the incident involving the assault on civilians by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) VIP policing unit was reported. Astonishingly, not a single perpetrator has been arrested thus far.

This raises a critical question: Are they being politically protected? It is difficult to ignore the glaring disparity in treatment. Had these perpetrators not been presidential protectors or associated with Deputy President Paul Mashatile, we believe they would have been apprehended days ago. This scenario is reminiscent of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, where “all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

The DA calls upon Police Minister Bheki Cele to take immediate action and arrest the perpetrators. Minister Cele possesses knowledge of their identities and the victims involved, in addition to clear video footage documenting the incident. It is time to cease attempts to sweep this grave incident under the carpet. The DA will not stand idly by and allow such behavior to go unchecked.

We are aware of the Minister’s affinity for grandstanding in front of cameras. Therefore, we urge him to hold a press conference before the end of the day and announce the arrest of the attackers. The public demands transparency and swift justice.

The actions of these blue light bullies have demonstrated a shocking abuse of power. We refuse to accept that internal disciplinary processes within the SAPS are sufficient consequences for their actions. The DA demands that they be arrested and held accountable through the full force of the law.

The video evidence, along with additional prima facie evidence in the possession of the SAPS, clearly identifies the perpetrators. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the SAPS to take immediate action and ensure their apprehension.

Let it be unequivocally clear that this incident must not, under any circumstances, be allowed to fade into obscurity. The principles of transparency, accountability, and the preservation of public trust demand that swift and decisive action be taken against these offenders. The DA will remain steadfast in advocating for the rights and safety of all citizens, ensuring that those who engage in such despicable behavior face the full consequences of their actions.

Regards

Andrew Whitfield MP
DA Shadow Minister of Police

Fun South African Fact: South Africa is known as the “Rainbow Nation” thanks to its mix of cultures across the country. The status of being a cultural “melting pot” is evident in the fact that South Africa has a whopping 11 official languages: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, IsiNdebele, Sesotho, Northern Sotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga. Most South Africans speak more than one national language. IsiZulu is the most common first language and isiXhosa is second. Fun fact – did you know the people of Wakanda speak isiXhosa in Marvel’s Black Panther movie?
