On Sunday, 8 December 2024, the GO GEORGE Bus Service proudly marked its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of providing safe, reliable, and affordable public transport to the residents of George. This significant milestone was made even more special with the opening of a new bus maintenance depot, reflecting the growth and progress achieved by the service over the years.
From its humble beginnings in 2014 with 12 buses servicing three routes, GO GEORGE has grown into a vital lifeline for the George community, now operating 133 buses across 33 routes and 465 kilometers. With nearly 20,000 passengers relying on the service daily, GO GEORGE has become an essential part of life for commuters traveling to work, school, healthcare facilities, and other destinations.
The Western Cape Mobility Department has played a key role in the capacitation of George Link, fostering innovation and resilience in the local public transport sector. The launch of the new depot, acquired by George Link and leased to MegaLink, represents a pivotal development in the ongoing improvement of fleet maintenance. Since MegaLink took over fleet maintenance, it has achieved a remarkable 50% reduction in fleet out-of-service rates, ensuring greater reliability and efficiency for the GO GEORGE service.
Reflecting on this momentous occasion, Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku said: “GO GEORGE’s 10-year journey is a testament to what we can achieve when government, communities, and stakeholders unite behind a shared vision. This bus service has transformed lives, connecting people to opportunities and services that are vital to their wellbeing. The launch of this new maintenance depot is a symbol of our commitment to delivering even more reliable and efficient public transport. I extend my gratitude to all who have contributed to this success and look forward to the continued growth and impact of GO GEORGE in the years to come.”
The GO GEORGE service, supported by the National Department of Transport, the Western Cape Mobility Government, and the George Municipality, continues to set an example of effective collaboration in addressing public transport needs.
As GO GEORGE celebrates this milestone, it reaffirms its commitment to being a dependable partner in mobility, connecting people and places, and driving the community’s growth and development.
