12 Years for Murder of Neighbour

22 September 2026 by Guest

SPRINGBOK – The Springbok Regional Court has sentenced 30-year-old Aylward van der Byl to an effective 12 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his 18-year-old neighbour, Marshall Perciville Sieplie, in Buffelsrivier.

The incident occurred on 14 March 2026, following an argument between the accused and the deceased the previous evening.

The accused had confronted the deceased about walking through his yard, resulting in an altercation. Later that evening, the accused threw a stone at the house of the deceased’s sister, Ms Petro Syster, breaking a window.

The following morning, the accused approached the deceased, who was seated in his yard, and an argument ensued.

The accused went into his house, armed himself with a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest.

Despite attempting to defend himself, the deceased succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The accused also assaulted Syster by slapping her in the face before bystanders intervened.

Police responded to the scene, where the deceased was declared dead. The accused was arrested the same day and the murder weapon was confiscated.

The accused pleaded guilty to murder, malicious damage to property and assault.

The court sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment for murder, of which three years were suspended for five years, and six months each for malicious damage to property and assault. The latter two sentences will run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective sentence of 12 years’ imprisonment.

The court considered substantial and compelling circumstances, including the accused’s guilty plea, remorse and the agreement of the deceased’s family to the sentence.

The investigation was conducted by Warrant Officer Chantal Cloete, who was commended for her thorough investigation.

Namakwa District Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, welcomed the sentence and reiterated that violent crime will not be tolerated.
