200 Years of Discoveries, Wonders, and Stories

6 March 2025 by Guest

The Iziko South African Museum (ISAM) turns 200 years old this year. This is a major milestone in South African museums’ history, making ISAM the oldest conventional museum in Southern Africa. Founded in 1825, ISAM has amassed vast multi-disciplinary collections comprising more than 10 million objects while inspiring generations of South Africans and international visitors alike.

To reflect on this watershed moment, the museum is showcasing its impressive collections that encompass a wide range of fields, amongst others archaeology, arts, anthropology, entomology, marine biology, palaeontology and social history.

“The South African Museum has played a vital role in preserving and promoting South Africa’s rich history and heritage. The bicentenary of the South African Museum – a reflection on 200 years of ISAM’s existence, provides the opportunity to critically explore its impacts, contributions, changes and difficult legacies.” said Mr Jabulani Sithole, Chairperson of Iziko Museums of South Africa Council.

“On 13 March 2025, we will launch a series of activities that we have lined up to reflect on this critical milestone. We invite South Africans and our visitors to participate in these activities, share their ideas and experiences with us. We are very grateful for the annual grant that the museum receives from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, our partners and corporates who have invested their resources to Iziko Museums. These resources have immensely contributed to the preservation and promotion of our rich heritage” concludes Mr Sithole.

Over the next twelve months, Iziko Museums of South Africa will undertake a series of infrastructural upgrades, as well as host a series of exhibitions, events, and activities that highlight its collections, research, and community engagement.

These include:

  • Major exhibitions showcasing the museum’s significant collections and research achievements,
  • A series of public lectures and discussions featuring renowned experts in various fields,
  • Guided tours and interactive programs for schools and families,
  • Commemorative publications highlighting the museum’s history, challenges and achievements,
  • Public launch of South African Heritage Hub Centre, which is a youth entrepreneurial hub, and
    Community engagements and Outreach.

The bicentenary takes place within the context of Reimagining Iziko Museums of South Africa. “We are mindful of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This will have a positive impact as we upgrade our exhibitions, galleries and embrace digital technologies.

Furthermore our teams are also working with various stakeholders to address the question of sacred ancestral Human Remains. We are committed to ensuring that our museums remain vibrant and relevant” – said Dr Bongani Ndhlovu, the Acting CEO of Iziko Museums of South Africa.

Visit the Iziko South African Museum as it continues to be a space for inclusive storytelling and inspiration for diverse people.
