4 Game Suspension for Taine Basham

16 November 2023 by Alan

The Disciplinary process related to Taine Basham’s Red Card in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship Round 4 game against Leinster on Sunday, November 12 has resulted in a four game suspension.

After an act of foul play by Dragons RFC player No 7 (Taine Basham), referee Gianluca Gnecchi showed the Player a Red Card in the 66th minute of the game under Law 9.13 – A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders.

In the Player’s responses to the Judicial Officer overseeing the disciplinary process (Roddy MacLeod, SRU), the Player accepted that he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a Red Card. Mr. MacLeod found that the incident met the Red Card threshold, with entry of mid-range warranting six weeks. The Player received two weeks mitigation due to his remorse, apology and engagement in the disciplinary process – which results in a four game suspension.

Fixtures Taine Basham is unavailable for:

  1. Dragons RFC v Ospreys 18 November 2023, Vodacom URC
  2. Hollywoodbets Sharks v Dragons RFC 25 November 2023, Vodacom URC
  3. Emirates Lions v Dragons RFC 2 December 2023, Vodacom URC
  4. Dragons RFC v Oyonnax Rugby 9 December 2023 EPCR Challenge Cup
