5 Rescued by Good Samaritans

Jacques Kruger, NSRI Durban duty coxswain, said: At 17h13, Sunday, 21 September, NSRI Durban duty crew were activated following reports from TNPA (Transnet National ports Authority) Port of Durban Port Control of a ski-boat capsized offshore of Maydon Wharf with casualty crew reported to be in the water.

The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 was launched while shore crew responded to the the Durban Esplanade.

a local private fishing vessels, Salty Souls and a motor vessel, that were in the area at the time, responded to assist.

On the NSRI rescue craft arriving on the scene we found that the crew, Good Samaritans, of the local private fishing craft Salty Souls, had rescued all 5 casualty crew from the water.

Efforts were being made to try to right the casualty craft.

NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the water where the NSRI rescue craft was able to right the casualty craft which was towed to the Pompano Angling Club where the casualty craft was recovered.

The skipper of the capsized vessel suffered an injury but was reportedly stable and not requiring any urgent medical care.

The cause of the ski-boat capsizing is being investigated.

The crew, Good Samaritans, onboard Salty Souls fishing craft that assisted are commended.
