Kraaifontein’s ‘Born Spartans’ danced away with R10 000 at the Festive Lights Switch-On dance battle this past weekend.
Cape Town, 20 November 2023 – With locals and tourists alike cheering loudly, Born Spartans were crowned the winners of the City of Cape Town’s inaugural ‘A Future of Hope’ Dance challenge, and danced away with R10 000, and the honours of performing at the upcoming Festive Lights Switch-On, Sunday 19 November at the V &A Waterfront,
The choreography, energy and skills of all the crews who made it to the battle, were exceptional and are indicative of the truly creative spirit and nature of Capetonians. Judging the entries was a tough job for professional dancers Blake Williams, and Nkosinathi Sangweni, who were gratefully and ably assisted by the cheering from a packed amphitheatre.
Taking the second spot with prize money of R5000, 021 Rebels from Bonteheuwel. Third place and winnings of R2000 went to Plumstead-based Dynamic Dance Co. All 10 crews received gift hampers from the City of Cape Town.
Born Spartans have been dancing together as a group of seven for nearly three years, and said how dance was an outlet for them to express themselves among a million other reasons to get up and move. They will split the winnings equally between them and donate the balance to their dance school to help it grow.
021 Rebels who have been together as a crew for seven years, had some excellent words of advice too, saying that for them it was important to never give up and to always have fun, which they certainly looked like they were having on the stage today. The Creativeworks Dance Studio, who have only been dancing as a team for six-months but have their Western Province colours, remarked how for them, dance is the best way to stay fit, remain active and to of course, create a family.
All three groups will bring the energy on Sunday 26th November at Festive Lights Switch-On.
Both judges, and an appreciate audience, agreed that Cape Town’s abundant talent was on full display, and it had been exciting witnessing the passion and creativity that each of the dance crews brought to the party.
The Festive Lights Switch-On is set for a thrilling showdown on Sunday 26th November 2023 from 16:00 on the Grand Parade. Artists on the bill include local heroes like Matthew Mole, Alistair Izobell, Whitney April, the Rivertones, Tjommies, RAAF, 12-year old Yonwaba Qetswana, Ricky Vani Frontline and more, along with Focalistic and Cassper Nyovest.
Aside from the music artists, Capetonians will be out in their forces to see the dazzling lights and the video mapping that will wrap City Hall moments after the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, makes the festive season official.
