A Second Chance That Lasts a Lifetime

Four years after their rescue, the Romania Five show why sanctuaries matter.

Bethlehem – Four years after their rescue from unsafe private captivity in Romania, five lions Roman, Vincent, Dolf, Ellie and Geena are thriving at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. But their story is also a powerful reminder of a critical reality: for many rescued wild animals, a return to the wild is not possible, making true sanctuaries more essential than ever.

Rescued in 2021 from inappropriate and dangerous keeping conditions, the siblings were given a second chance through an international rescue effort led by global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS The lions were brought to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands for treatment and preparation, before their journey to South Africa. They were relocated to their forever home at LIONSROCK in South Africa on World Lion Day 10 August 2022. Today, they live together in a large, natural enclosure designed to meet their physical and behavioural needs, far removed from the confined and unnatural environment they once endured.

Why rescued lions cannot return to the wild
While their journey represents hope and recovery, it also highlights a common misconception: that rescued lions can simply be released back into the wild. “Lions like the Romania Five have spent their lives in captivity, often deprived of the opportunity to learn essential survival skills,” says Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa. “They have not been taught how to hunt, avoid danger or integrate into wild prides. Releasing them would put their lives at serious risk and could disrupt existing ecosystems. True sanctuaries offer the only ethical solution providing lifelong care in environments that respect their needs.” Animals born or kept in captivity may also have experienced trauma, poor nutrition or inadequate veterinary care, further reducing their chances of survival in the wild. Instead, reputable sanctuaries provide a safe, controlled environment where animals can express natural behaviours without facing the threats of starvation, human conflict or territorial competition.

A lifetime commitment to species-appropriate care
At LIONSROCK, the Romania Five now roam a spacious, enriched habitat featuring natural elements such as, open grassland, rocky outcrops and shaded areas provided by trees which is their natural environment. Their daily care is guided by experienced animal caretakers, veterinarians and behaviour specialists who ensure that their physical and psychological wellbeing is prioritised. “Every rescued animal comes with a unique history, which means their rehabilitation journey is different,” explains Hildegard Pirker, Sanctuary Manager at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. “For lions like Dolf, who is more sensitive and cautious, building trust takes time and patience. Our role is to provide them with a secure environment where they can gradually gain confidence and express natural behaviours on their own terms.”

Four years on: reflecting on progress and the road ahead
Four years after their rescue, the Romania Five continue to grow in confidence and wellbeing under expert care at LIONSROCK.

A growing need for ethical solutions
The story of the Romania Five also sheds light on the ongoing issue of private lion keeping and exploitation. From backyard breeding facilities to commercial use in entertainment, such practices continue to put lions at risk. “While we celebrate how far these five lions have come, their story is also a call to action,” adds Miles. “There are still countless animals suffering in captivity around the world. Strengthening legislation, ending private keeping and supporting true sanctuaries are critical steps to breaking this cycle.”

Celebrating four years of freedom
As the Romania Five mark four years since their rescue, their lives stand as a testament to resilience and to the importance of ethical, long-term solutions for wild animals in need. At LIONSROCK, they have found what every rescued animal deserves: safety, space and the freedom to simply be lions.
