Dear Editor
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape welcomes Buffalo City Metro’s (BCM) recent initiative to engage with national stakeholders on the unsustainable electricity tariff hikes.
While we remain cautiously optimistic, this move signals that BCM may finally be taking concrete steps towards addressing a crisis of its own making, which could potentially bring relief to the residents and businesses.
Excessive electricity tariffs have placed significant financial pressure on residents and businesses in BCM. The DA has consistently raised concerns about the detrimental effects of these costs on economic growth and residents’ quality of life.
The reported meeting between BCM Executive Mayor, Princess Faku, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and the Chairperson of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) marks a crucial first step in tackling systemic issues, such as electricity losses, which contribute to these unsustainable increases.
The DA urges BCM to ensure that any agreements or solutions arising from these discussions are communicated transparently to the public, with residents’ interests remaining the top priority.
As we move forward, the DA will continue to advocate for fair and affordable electricity tariffs, increased investment in electricity infrastructure, sustainable solutions to illegal connections, and measures that relieve the financial burden on BCM residents and businesses.
The DA remains steadfast in its commitment to fighting for the people of Buffalo City Metro against exorbitant and unsustainable electricity tariffs!
