A political thought does not always begin with a speech, a parliamentary debate or a commission of inquiry. Sometimes it begins with something as ordinary as a song.
I was listening to one recently, turning its lyrics over in my mind and reflecting on what they said about our history and the long road South Africa has travelled since the birth of our democracy, when, quite separately, I came across a clip of Duduzane Zuma addressing the BizNews Conference.
The song had nothing to do with him. He had nothing to do with the song. Yet, in my mind, the two moments collided. The song turned my thoughts towards where we came from; the speech turned them towards where we are going. Somewhere…
