Calls for Urgent Intervention Following Wave of Unresolved Murders in Mkhuhlu

ActionSA is deeply concerned by the alarming rise in violent crime in Mkhuhlu, Mpumalanga. Recent incidents and reports from the community point to a disturbing pattern of unresolved murders and violent attacks, with residents expressing growing concern over the apparent lack of arrests and meaningful progress in bringing perpetrators to justice.

Our concerns have been heightened by the latest horrific attack, in which four people were gunned down and a fifth person was seriously injured on the night of Sunday, 12 July 2026. This tragedy has once again exposed the deteriorating state of safety and security in Mkhuhlu and the urgent need for decisive intervention.

If these reports are accurate, it is unacceptable that such a significant number of murder cases remain unresolved with little apparent progress. This not only denies justice to victims and their families but also emboldens criminals and leaves communities living in constant fear.

ActionSA therefore calls on the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison to urgently assess the operational effectiveness of the Calcutta Police Station. This should include a review of the station’s leadership, investigative capacity, resource allocation and the overall handling of serious violent crime in the area.

The people of Mkhuhlu deserve a police service that is professional, accountable and committed to protecting communities and bringing violent criminals to justice. ActionSA believes an independent assessment is necessary to determine whether operational shortcomings, inadequate resources or other factors are contributing to the apparent lack of progress in these investigations.

ActionSA stands in solidarity with the affected families and the broader Mkhuhlu community. We will continue to demand accountability, effective policing and urgent action to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system. Residents deserve to live in safe communities where violent criminals are pursued, arrested and brought before the courts without delay.
