ActionSA Mpumalanga raises serious concerns over waste collection failures in eMalahleni Ward 7, where residents are reportedly resorting to informal arrangements to dispose of household rubbish due to inadequate municipal refuse removal services.
Residents have reportedly been paying individuals to remove their garbage, only for some of the waste to be dumped in trenches instead of being disposed of properly. This creates blockages during rainfall and raises concerns about flooding, environmental pollution and the health and safety of residents, particularly children.
The municipality cannot allow communities to bear the consequences of unreliable basic services. When refuse collection fails, residents are left vulnerable to illegal dumping, unhealthy living conditions and preventable environmental hazards.
ActionSA calls on eMalahleni Local Municipality to urgently restore reliable refuse collection services in Ward 7, clear illegally dumped waste and blocked trenches, and implement measures to prevent further dumping.
The municipality must also ensure that residents have accessible, reliable and safe ways to dispose of household waste without being forced to rely on informal arrangements that may worsen the problem.
Clean neighbourhoods are not a luxury; they are essential to public health, environmental protection and the dignity of our communities.
ActionSA will continue to hold the municipality accountable for ensuring that residents receive the basic services they deserve.
