Season’s first serious downpours are beginning to sweep over the Highveld, and that shift matters to anyone running a yard, depot, workshop or forecourt in Gauteng. October rewrites the risk picture. In August a dribble of diesel would simply bake off on hot concrete; now that same trickle can be swept across a property within minutes and straight into the nearest storm water grid. Afrisupply, the Boksburg-based manufacturer and supplier of spill containment and hazmat products, is treating the opening of the summer rainfall months as a prompt for South African businesses to inspect their spill equipment before the rain lands on site, rather than once a sheen shows up in the drain.

The company lays out its thinking plainly on its own website: if a spill is not contained fast, it can leave the property, flow into a storm water drain and finish up in an open river. From that point on, the costs, the hazard to workers and the harm to the environment all climb steeply. Rain itself does not cause spills, but it sends every unmanaged one further and faster, which makes the turn of the season a logical point to reassess what is actually on hand.

Why the rainy season raises the stakes

Most spills on an operating site are undramatic affairs. Think of a leak from a parked truck, a drum tipped over while being offloaded, a hydraulic line seeping beneath a machine, or a minor overfill at a fuel point. On a dry day, these are untidy but easy to handle. Throw a summer storm into the mix and the identical incident blends with running water, covers a much wider area and flows toward the lowest point on the property, which is nearly always a drain.

Afrisupply highlights that South African law, the Waste Management Act and the Hazardous Substances Act included, assigns responsibility for spills to whichever organisation caused them. Should contamination make it into a river, the party responsible can be held accountable for the complete clean-up and for its effect on land and people. According to the company, that can mean steep costs and fines, and where negligence is established, even imprisonment. Its FAQ further cites SANS 1186, which obliges transporters, manufacturers, suppliers and others dealing with hazmat products to act proactively to prevent spills and to handle them correctly when they occur.

For safety officers, that legal backdrop shifts spill readiness out of the optional column and into basic compliance. It also accounts for the company’s emphasis on having proactive measures in place, such as containment beneath stored liquids, alongside reactive ones, such as a stocked kit kept close by, ready for both minor and major spills. Afrisupply observes that this twin approach doubles as a fast route for organisations to meet ISO certification requirements.

Spill kits matched to the substance and the site

The Spill Kits sit at the heart of the Afrisupply range, engineered by the company to tackle hydrocarbons, solvents, chemicals and other liquid spills swiftly and effectively. Which kit you need comes down to what you are handling. Afrisupply groups them broadly into hydrocarbon or oil only kits that soak up oil while shedding water, universal kits for oils and non aggressive chemicals, chemical or hazmat kits for aggressive chemicals and bases, and biological kits for bodily fluids. Come the rainy season, the oil only variant becomes particularly useful on outdoor sites, since an absorbent that repels water carries on working across a wet surface instead of soaking up the rain.

Format and size count every bit as much as the absorbent itself. Afrisupply offers wheelie bin spill kits in 80L, 130L, 240L, 660L and 1000L trolleys suited to construction sites, warehouses, forecourts and manufacturing plants. For vehicles, it produces tough, rip proof PVC carry bags built for tight spaces like a truck or tanker cab, or for hanging off a wall mounted hook. Each kit carries clear labelling so it can be spotted in an emergency, and holds the absorbents, containment products and standard PPE the task demands, together with a complete inventory and a spill response guide. That inventory pays off once a busy storm season has passed, letting a site see what has been consumed and reorder ahead of the next incident. Refills and spill consumables are supplied by the company for precisely that reason.

The company spells out what a truck or tanker kit is designed to do. Cleaning up an entire load is not the point. Instead, it tackles routine everyday spills and, during a serious incident, equips the driver to seal off storm water drains and contain a runaway spill until the response team arrives. On a rain-soaked road or a flooded loading bay, those opening minutes are precisely when containment counts the most.

Keeping leaks off the ground in the first place

The least expensive spill to deal with is the one that never touches the ground at all. Afrisupply produces polyethylene Drip Trays in small, medium and large sizes, ranging from 75cm by 45cm up to 100cm by 100cm, plus mesh drip trays in matching footprints. Positioned under machinery, pumps, generators, decanting points and parked equipment, they capture slow leaks before the rain can pick them up and carry them across a yard.

When it comes to stored liquids, the company’s spill decks offer portable bunding for everything from small 25L containers up to 210L drums and IBC tanks. Afrisupply additionally builds customised PVC containment products for sites that want an easily transportable solution made to their own spec. Once the summer rain settles in, these products let sites maintain secondary containment in spots that would otherwise drain directly into the storm water system.

Protecting people as well as the environment

There is more to spill response than the ground alone. Anyone handling chemicals, mopping up a spill or working near decanting points risks being splashed, and should that reach the eyes, the window to react is tiny. Afrisupply stocks a selection of Eye Wash Stations, spanning portable double bottle kits and saline solution cases through to wall mountable units and free standing stations worked by hand, by foot or by both. Emergency showers and first aid kits are supplied by the company too, letting a site go over its personal safety equipment and its spill kits together in a single pass.

Summer generally means more work outdoors, more equipment being washed down and more handling of cleaning chemicals and degreasers, so confirming afresh that eye wash stations are filled, reachable and clearly signposted slots neatly into a pre storm season review.

Who the range serves

Afrisupply serves a wide spread of industries, with its product descriptions pointing to transport and tanker fleets, manufacturing plants, warehouses, fuel forecourts, construction sites and laboratories. Alongside the core spill kits, the range takes in absorbents like coco peat, chemical absorbent scatter and powder, biological absorbent granules and a remediation agent, plus speciality kits for mercury, paint, glass, cytotoxic and HACCP settings. The company additionally carries a hydro carbon degreaser, cabinets, basic fire equipment, roadside safety items and recycling units.

Afrisupply describes itself as a South African specialist manufacturer and supplier of customised PVC products, hazmat and pollution contamination spill kits, containment products and absorbents. It supplies the local South African market together with clients across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Its team can also help with site spill risk assessments, supporting businesses in pinpointing where spills are most probable and which practical solutions fit each area.

A practical pre season checklist

For companies gearing up for the wet months, Afrisupply’s advice boils down to a brief set of checks. Walk the property and pinpoint every drain, particularly those close to loading bays, fuel points and wash bays. Make sure a suitable kit sits within reach of each high risk area and that every truck or tanker carries one of its own. Open each kit and compare its contents against the inventory, replacing whatever has been used up or perished. Slide drip trays beneath equipment known to leak and ensure stored drums and IBCs rest on proper containment. Verify that eye wash stations are full and clear of obstruction. Lastly, confirm that staff know where the equipment lives and how to work it. For this very reason, Afrisupply publishes spill kit training videos and product demonstration videos on its website.

Not one of these steps is complicated, yet taken together they separate a minor cleanup from a reportable incident when the season’s first big storm breaks midway through a shift.

Ordering and resellers

Afrisupply sells to businesses directly and partners with resellers as well, running a dedicated reseller programme for companies keen to stock its range. Customers are able to assemble a quote list online, request a formal quote and browse both the product catalogue and the current promotions. Since the company manufactures and customises its own products, it can also assemble spill kits to a site’s exact requirements instead of sticking to standard configurations only.
