The DA is deeply alarmed by revelations of yet another questionable tender, this time involving a so-called “ghost company” awarded R428 million for the provision of oxygen plants to state hospitals. According to a report by the Daily Maverick, the company in question appears to lack the necessary infrastructure, experience, or track record to fulfil this critical healthcare contract. Furthermore, per the report, the company, Bulkeng LTD does not appear to have a website nor an office building leading to more questions than answers.
This development is yet another example of the systemic issues plaguing the current procurement system. Despite countless promises, the Department of Health has yet to blacklist any company for corrupt activities. With the impending rollout of the National Health Insurance (NHI), this incident raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the healthcare sector.
We will request that the Independent Development Trust (IDT) appear before the Portfolio Committee on Health to explain its role in the tender award and to provide clarity on the measures taken to vet suppliers for critical health services
How can South Africans trust the Department of Health with the massive responsibility of implementing NHI when it continually fails to prevent and address clear signs of potential corruption? This case exemplifies why the DA continues to oppose the NHI in its current form, as it risks exacerbating corruption without accountability or oversight. The government must address these lapses and reform its procurement practices to protect South African healthcare and taxpayer funds.
