The Pan African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission has launched activities marking the 2026 Africa Day celebration in Abuja with events focused on continental unity, trade integration and sustainable development.
Africa Day is observed every May 25 to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, the body that later evolved into the African Union. This year’s activities began with a “Liberation Walk” around the Jabi Lake area in Abuja involving diplomats, students, civil society groups and volunteers.
The 2026 theme is focused on sustainable water access and sanitation systems as part of efforts to advance the goals of Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long term development blueprint for transforming Africa into an integrated and economically powerful continent.
Steven Ben-Joel, global president of the mission, described the commemoration as a continental call for action on Africa’s development challenges and opportunities.
As part of the activities, the organization commissioned a water project in the Garam community in Niger State to support water, sanitation and hygiene access. Community leaders said the project would help reduce the burden residents previously faced in accessing clean water.
The event also featured the launch of the African Digital Trade Centre Pan African Continental Super Marketplace, known as PAC SM, a technology driven trade platform designed to connect buyers and sellers across Africa. Organizers said the system integrates logistics, finance, compliance and education tools into a single digital ecosystem aimed at supporting intra African trade.
Chairman of the marketplace, Patrick Ugboma, said the platform was created to help African businesses access broader continental markets and contribute to the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Agenda 2063 was adopted by the African Union in 2013 as a 50 year strategic framework for economic integration, industrialization, infrastructure development and continental cooperation. The initiative is often described by the AU as “The Africa We Want.”
The programme in Abuja also included cultural performances and youth activities aimed at promoting Pan African identity and engagement among younger Africans.
