31 July 2026 – Sasol Banyana Banyana clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit to force a share of the spoils in a tightly contested Women’s Africa Cup of Nations group match against Cote d’Ivoire at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on Friday night.
It was a hard-fought 2-2 draw that the players had to dig in deep to force against the West Africans. The South African senior women’s national team started on the backfoot and things got more difficult when Ivorian Ruth Sery scored the opening goal of the match in the 18th minute. Sery got her brace when she increased the lead in the 36th minute.
Banyana Banyana then went to work and tried to claw their way back, with Thembi Kgatlana finally pulling a goal back in the 70th minute. The South Africans put Cote d’Ivoire under a lot of pressure and were eventually rewarded when substitute Hildah Magaia, who replaced Nthabiseng Majiya, scored the equaliser deep in the referee’s optional time.
Coach Dr Desiree Ellis’ charges face Burkina Faso in their final group stage fixture on Tuesday at 22h00 SA time.
South African Football: Bafana Bafana’s highest FIFA ranking was 16th in 1996.
