Breaking Barriers in Tech – Empowering Young Women to Lead South Africa’s Digital Future

Johannesburg, Dec 2024 – In a time when South Africa’s digital economy is growing exponentially, the need for skilled professionals in the tech industry has never been greater. Yet, despite this rapid growth, a persistent gender imbalance and youth unemployment crisis continue to threaten the industry’s full potential. One young woman, Khosa Morongwa, is challenging this reality. Her journey to becoming an IT professional, supported by Signa Trust’s bursary fund, embodies the promise of transformation in a sector often limited by inequality and access.

“Khosa’s story is about personal perseverance and the larger narrative of empowering young women to break into the male-dominated field of technology,” says (spokesperson). “She represents the thousands of young South Africans striving to equip themselves with the skills needed to thrive in an evolving job market.”

Having grown up in a community with limited resources, Khosa faced significant financial challenges. Despite these obstacles, she has shown an unwavering passion for technology and an impressive academic record. Through the Signa Trust bursary, she now has the opportunity to pursue her dream of earning a diploma in IT at one of the country’s leading institutions.

Addressing South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis through skills development

The need for skilled professionals is a pressing issue in South Africa. According to recent statistics, youth unemployment hovers around 60%, while women in the tech industry remain underrepresented. Khosa’s success is not only an inspirational personal achievement but also a crucial step in addressing these systemic issues. Her journey underscores the value of targeted investment in skills development as a solution to youth unemployment.

Industry experts believe that women like Khosa can play a pivotal role in closing the skills gap, particularly in emerging industries such as information technology, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation. “By equipping young women with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed, we are addressing gender inequality and providing our economy with the skilled workforce it desperately needs,” says Tulani Hlabangana, Group Executive Director at Signa Trust

The support Khosa receives from Signa Trust and their partners exemplifies the power of collaboration between education, business, and community to tackle these challenges. Her progress is an example of how the right educational investment can bring real, long-term benefits – not only for the individual but for the industry and economy as a whole.

Women in Tech: Paving the way for future leaders

Khosa’s ambition to become a role model for other young women in tech is equally important. As she moves closer to completing her diploma, Khosa is positioning herself as a future leader in the South African tech industry. She is eager to contribute to the country’s digital growth by applying her skills to real-world challenges and by mentoring other young women with similar dreams.

“South Africa’s tech industry needs more female leaders, and I hope my story can inspire others to pursue their passion, no matter the challenges they face,” said Khosa. Her dedication to education and her determination to overcome adversity serve as a beacon of hope for many young women, showing them that their dreams, too, can be realised.

The impact of her success will extend far beyond her personal achievements. Once she completes her IT diploma, Khosa will have the chance to contribute to key sectors driving the South African economy forward – from digital infrastructure development to tech innovation in businesses. Her story of resilience and success could encourage more young women to follow in her footsteps, helping to reshape the gender landscape of the tech industry in South Africa.

Join the movement to empower future talent

Khosa’s journey illustrates the incredible potential that can be unlocked through education, skills development, and community support. By investing in young leaders like her, South African businesses and organisations have the opportunity to build a more inclusive, innovative, and competitive tech industry.

Signa Trust invites corporate partners and stakeholders in the tech community to support initiatives that uplift and empower young women. Together, we can build a future where every dream has the opportunity to flourish. By contributing to the Signa Trust Bursary Fund, your company can play a pivotal role in transforming not only Khosa’s future but also the future of the industry she will help lead.
