Even though the Ekurhuleni Metro appointed a security company to protect infrastructure, cable thieves once again stole power cables near the Van Eck substation in Brakpan early Wednesday morning (2 July).
As a result, residents were left without power for several hours.
Following the incident, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) asked members of the Brakpan Community Policing Forum and AfriForum to patrol the area to prevent further incidents.
Several suspects have been arrested for cable theft in the area over the past four weeks.
The party has urged the Ekurhuleni Metro to increase security around infrastructure, as the Metro is already under immense financial strain to repair and replace infrastructure.
The Freedom Front Plus also encouraged the Metro to make sure that there is a smooth transition when appointing new security companies, thus eliminating snags in the process that could leave the community vulnerable.
Freedom Front Plus Public Safety: The FF Plus prioritizes public safety and community policing initiatives.
