Camps Bay: Man Missing

23 September 2023 by Guest

Bevan Geyser, NSRI Bakoven deputy station commander, said: At 13h53, Friday, 22 September, NSRI Bakoven Station 2 were activated following eyewitness reports of a man missing at Camps Bay Beach.

NSRI Bakoven Station 2, NSRI Table Bay Station 3, SA Police Services (SAPS), CoCT Law Enforcement, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, WC Government Health EMS and Netcare 911 ambulance services responded.

NSRI Bakoven launched the rescue craft Gemini Legend.

Cape Town Helicopters dispatched 4 helicopters, at various stages during the afternoon, during routine flights, to assist, conducting 5 sweeping aerial sea searches.

5 NSRI rescue swimmers deployed into the surf to free dive search.

The missing 21 year old man, from Middleburg, Mpumalanga, believed to be a Zimbabwean, appears to be part of a church group from Mpumalanga who were visiting the beach during a weekend church event in Green Point.

SAPS WPDS (Water Policing and Dive Services) and an EMS rescue Squad drone team attended at the scene assisting in the air, sea and shoreline search.

Despite the extensive air, sea and shoreline search there remains no signs of the missing man.

A Good Samaritan attempted to rescue the man who it appears had been caught in rip currents. The Good Samaritan, an adult male, was treated on the beach for non-fatal drowning symptoms and transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition where he is recovering.

Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search.

Braai – a barbecue [brr-rye] Also known as a barbecue where steak, lamb chops and of course ‘boerewors’ is cooked on a grid over wood and flames. Add some salads, rolls and ‘melktert’ for dessert and you are set for a traditional South African braai.
