The Freedom Front Plus Youth (VF Plus-jeug) strongly condemns the ongoing unrest and vandalism on campuses of the University of the Free State (UFS) fuelled by students claiming that the new financial policy is racially discriminatory, despite clear communication regarding the matter from the University.
The University clearly stated that the new arrangements regarding outstanding debt are not applicable to NSFAS students and that it will not affect their registration.
Despite this, certain groups are blowing the entire situation out of proportion and making a “racial issue” out of it by alleging discrimination against poor black households because of the threshold of R30 000 for outstanding amounts.
The Freedom Front Plus Youth maintains its stance that a higher education funding scheme requiring no repayment is unsustainable. It places an unbearable burden on state coffers.
The reality is that UFS is one of the few tertiary institutions in the country that still allows students with outstanding debt to register – an act of inclusivity, not exclusion.
The decision to implement a more sustainable system is responsible and fair.
The fact that some students opt to resort to violence and vandalism instead of engaging with the University shows that the ANC and EFF’s race-based rhetoric and victim mentality are poisoning campuses.
The Freedom Front Plus calls on student leaders to act responsibility, engage in dialogue and seek solutions without jeopardising the University’s infrastructure or the safety of other students.
Higher education is a privilege and an opportunity – not a battleground for political agendas.
True leadership means seeking solutions, not destruction.
