Cape Storms Prompt Car Insurance Switch for SA Drivers

Homeowners forced to review their insurance after the June 2026 storm damage found car insurance policies untouched for up to five years — and savings of R200–R600 per month waiting on the table.

CAPE TOWN: The severe storms that swept the Western Cape in June 2026, causing widespread property damage and a surge in insurance claims, have had an unexpected secondary effect: thousands of South African homeowners are reviewing their full insurance portfolios for the first time in years — and discovering their car insurance has been quietly inflating on a debit order they never revisited.

For many, the car insurance policy sitting alongside their home cover had not been compared since inception. Industry data shows that SA insurers increase premiums at every annual review, and the spread between the cheapest and most expensive insurer for identical cover on the same vehicle can exceed R700 per month — or R8,400 per year.

“The Western Cape storms reminded South Africans that insurance as a whole needs regular attention,” said a spokesperson for Compare Car Insurance. “What surprised many was that the easiest saving wasn’t on their home policy — it was on the car insurance that had been running on auto-pilot for five years.”

“Loyalty is not rewarded in South African car insurance. Insurers compete hardest for new customers, not existing ones. A policy that was priced competitively in 2021 is almost certainly not competitive today — and switching costs nothing.”

Under South African law, car insurance policies are month-to-month contracts. There is no exit fee, no penalty, and no requirement to wait until renewal. One calendar month’s written notice to the existing insurer is all that is required — and a no-claims discount certificate carries accumulated claims-free history across to the new policy.

Compare Car Insurance, which connects SA drivers with six FSCA-licenced insurers in a single comparison session, has seen a marked increase in Western Cape enquiries since the storms. The platform allows drivers to submit their details once and receive live, competing quotes the same day — with no obligation to proceed.

“If your last insurance review was when you bought your car, you are almost certainly overpaying. Five years of annual increases, compounded, adds up to a significant premium above what the same insurer would quote you as a new customer today,” the spokesperson added.

Key facts:

  • Typical monthly saving when SA drivers compare and switch: R200–R600
  • Exit fee or cancellation penalty under SA law: R0
  • Notice required to cancel: one calendar month’s written notice

“If a young man tells his date how handsome, smart and successful he is – that’s advertising. If the young man tells his date she’s intelligent, looks lovely, and is a great conversationalist, he’s saying the right things to the right person and that’s marketing. If someone else tells the young woman how handsome, smart and successful her date is – that’s PR.” – S. H. Simmons

Movie Magic: What do Sandra Bullock, Ben Affleck, and Robert De Niro have in common? They’ve all portrayed PR practitioners on the big screen! If you haven’t seen PR take a starring role in Our Brand is Crisis (Bullock), Jersey Girl (Affleck), or Wag the Dog (De Niro), add these classics to your Netflix list ASAP. Whether or not you take away any practical lessons, it’s fascinating to watch a Hollywood portrayal of our profession.
