Case Study: Improving Copper Ore Inventory with 3DPro2501 Laser Scanner

In a large copper mine, inventory control had long been a critical but unresolved issue. The site managed large volumes of ore powder across open stockyards and enclosed storage areas. For years, the team relied on manual measurement and experience-based judgment. This approach often resulted in inaccurate inventory data, delayed reporting, and weak coordination between procurement, production, and finance. As a result, decisions were often reactive rather than planned, affecting both cost control and operational efficiency.

On-Site Challenges in Copper Ore Inventory

The complexity of the working environment made the problem worse. Copper ore piles are naturally irregular, constantly changing shape due to loading and unloading. The site also faced high dust levels, moisture, and frequent temperature fluctuations, which made traditional measurement tools unreliable. Manual inventory checks required significant time and manpower, sometimes taking an entire day to complete a full stockyard survey.

During this period, operations had to slow down, directly impacting productivity. In addition, workers faced safety risks when climbing or moving around unstable stockpiles. Most importantly, the lack of real-time data meant that inventory records were always behind actual conditions, leading to either material shortages or unnecessary stock buildup.

These issues clearly showed that traditional methods could no longer meet the needs of modern copper mining operations.

Deployment of 3DPro2501 Laser Scanner

To solve these challenges, the mine implemented the 3DPro2501 Laser Scanner as a core tool for inventory management. Designed for harsh industrial environments, the system features IP67 protection, ensuring stable operation in dusty and humid conditions. It also performs reliably under extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to 85°C, significantly reducing maintenance frequency. Once installed, the scanner enabled rapid data collection by performing full stockpile scans within minutes. Using high-density point cloud technology, it captured detailed surface data and calculated volume with up to 99.5% accuracy. This transformed inventory data from rough estimates into precise, measurable figures that could be trusted for daily operations and decision-making.

Operational Impact and Practical Value

The introduction of the system brought immediate and measurable improvements. After each scan, the platform generated a clear 3D model of the stockpile, allowing managers to visualize material distribution, volume, and changes over time without being physically present. The system also recorded historical data, enabling trend analysis and better forecasting. It supported both periodic inventory checks in large outdoor yards and real-time monitoring in indoor facilities. With automatic data upload and report generation, manual intervention was greatly reduced. As a result, the company shortened inventory cycles, improved data reliability, and enhanced coordination across departments. More importantly, it addressed the long-standing issue of data lag, allowing the business to move toward proactive and data-driven management.

As copper mining continues to evolve toward automation and digital operations, solving inventory accuracy and efficiency is no longer optional. If your operation is still facing challenges with unreliable data and slow inventory processes, now is the time to adopt a proven solution.

Sigmund Freud was tghe founding father of Public Relations, Edward Bernays’ “double uncle”. Sigmund was Edward’s mother’s brother, and he married Edward’s father’s sister (Martha Bernays Freud). That was a tongue twister, but aren’t you glad you learned a new term?

To overcome our biological limitations as individuals, we have co-evolved collective systems and capacities – cultural, social, economic, political, scientific, media, educational, Public Relations, etc. But the flaw in all that is that we have designed them primarily for comfort, profit, power, control, and entertainment rather than for collective intelligence, sanity, and wisdom. – Tom Atlee
