Journal of Public Health in Africa Expands With New Rapid Communications, Policy and News Sections

Location: News

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)

The Journal of Public Health in Africa (JPHIA) (http://apo-opa.co/4vB6Xtz), owned by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) (http://www.AfricaCDC.org), has launched three new article categories to accelerate the sharing of public health evidence, policy insights and news from across the continent.

These new categories complement the journal's existing article types, which include original research, reviews, opinions, implementation articles and case reports.

The new categories – ‘Rapid Communications', ‘Health Policy' and ‘Scientific News' – will provide researchers, policymakers, public health practitioners and science journalists with additional platforms to share findings, perspectives and developments that can inform public health action in Africa.

The move follows a growing trend among leading scientific and medical journals to introduce dedicated formats for rapid reporting, policy analysis and science journalism, to ensure key public health information reaches decision-makers and practitioners more quickly.

“Timely evidence and effective communication are critical to ending outbreaks,” said Dr Mosoka Fallah, Head of the Science and Innovation Division at Africa CDC.

Rapid Communications are short, peer-reviewed reports on disease outbreaks, health emergencies and other significant public health events where prompt publication can support response efforts or raise awareness of emerging issues.

The new Health Policy category will feature articles on policy development, guidelines, frameworks, health systems strengthening, health financing and public health economics, helping promote evidence-informed decision-making.

The Scientific News section will cover developments in science, public health, policy and people across Africa. Often written by science journalists, these articles will highlight outbreaks, research breakthroughs, policy advances and other emerging issues shaping the continent's public health landscape.

More details can be found in the journal's author guidelines (https://apo-opa.co/4vEC9bA).

“With this scope expansion and other significant measures, JPHIA aims to further enhance its quality, visibility and impact,” said Dr Nebiyu Dereje, the journal's Editor-in-Chief.

JPHIA is positioning itself not only as a publishing platform but also as a catalyst for strengthening Africa's scientific publishing ecosystem. Through mentorship, training and editorial support, the journal aims to increase the number of African researchers publishing in peer-reviewed journals while improving the quality and visibility of African-led research.

Ongoing improvements by JPHIA include a 100% article processing charge waiver for unfunded submissions from low-income African countries, faster editorial and production timelines, and stronger promotion of published research through Africa CDC's communication and social media platforms.

13,000 Hectare Wild Coast Conservation Property Comes to the Market in the Eastern Cape

Location: Business
Bass Property Group

One of the largest privately held conservation properties in the Eastern Cape has been put up for sale. Tyityaba Nature Reserve, a proclaimed reserve covering roughly 13,000 hectares on the Wild Coast, has been listed at an indicative R145 million (about USD 8.9 million), according to the selling agent, Bass Property Group (www.BassPropertyGroup.co.za).

The property sits about 18 kilometres inland from Kei Mouth. Its status as a gazetted proclaimed reserve, a designation under South African law, ties the land to long-term conservation management and places it within a category of property that has drawn growing interest from investors looking for protected land. Listings of this scale are uncommon, and proclaimed reserves seldom change hands, making the sale a notable event in the regional market.

Scale and setting

Size is the reserve's most distinguishing feature. It holds about 26 kilometres of frontage along the Kei River and a perimeter of roughly 81 kilometres, taking in rolling bushveld, riverine thicket and the open vistas typical of the Wild Coast, a region known for its biodiversity and its remoteness. The varied terrain supports a mix of habitats, from valley grassland to dense thicket, that sustains the reserve's wildlife through the seasons.

That remoteness is relative. King Phalo Airport in East London, which has direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, is about an hour away by road, placing the reserve within comfortable reach of major centres while preserving the seclusion that defines the Wild Coast.

Wildlife

The reserve carries buffalo, giraffe, leopard, zebra, blue wildebeest, eland and impala, along with a wide range of birdlife. Populations of spiral-horned antelope, such as nyala, kudu and bushbuck, are prolific and well established. Tyityaba has a long record of regulated, quota-based wildlife use carried out within South Africa's conservation framework, and its established game populations would allow a new owner to continue managed conservation operations without a lengthy restocking period.

Infrastructure

The main lodge has eight en-suite bedrooms and shared entertainment areas. The property also includes an abattoir and workshop, with several other farm dwellings spread across the holding that could house staff or be developed to accommodate guests. An airstrip on site would need upgrading before it could be used, though it raises the possibility of fly-in access alongside the road route from East London. Together, the existing buildings give a buyer a working base from which to operate or further develop the reserve.

How it can be bought

The land is made up of 26 portions across five titles. It can be bought as a single holding or, the agent says, divided among several owners as a development. That structure is part of what they expect will determine who comes forward.

“Tyityaba is a large landholding of a kind that rarely comes to the open market in South Africa,” said Hanlie Bassingthwaighte, a principal of Bass Property Group. “Its main strength is flexibility. It can work as a single-owner reserve or as the basis for a development shared among several owners.”

Price

The reserve is listed at an indicative R145 million (about USD 8.9 million). The agent attributes the figure to the property's size, biodiversity and the range of ownership options it allows.

“Twenty-six kilometres of river frontage and 13,000 hectares of established habitat take generations to form and cannot be recreated,” said Joshua Bassingthwaighte, also a principal of the firm.

Joint Statement by the WHO and FAO in South Africa on World Food Safety Day 2026

Location: News

World Health Organization (WHO) - South Africa
Download logo

On World Food Safety Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), join South Africa and the global community in recognising that safe food is essential for good health, good nutrition, decent livelihoods, fair trade and public trust in the food system. Every meal should nourish people, not put them at risk.

Food safety matters in every part of daily life: in homes, schools, farms, markets, factories, shops and health facilities. It also matters for South Africa's economy, because safe food supports jobs, local businesses, tourism, exports and confidence among consumers and trading partners.

Unsafe food can affect anyone. It can cause illness that disrupts family life, school attendance, work and income.

Food safety is not only a health issue. It is also a food systems issue, an agriculture issue, an environment issue and an economic issue. This is why the One Health approach is essential, recognising the close links between people, animals, plants and the environment, and guiding coordinated action by WHO, FAO and partners.

The good news is that many food safety risks can be prevented through practical action, strong systems and shared responsibility. Governments have a role in setting and enforcing standards. Food businesses have a role in building a culture of safety. Health workers and laboratories have a role in detecting and reporting illness. Farmers, food handlers, educators, researchers, journalists and consumers all have a role to play.

“Food safety is a foundation of public health. When food is safe, families are protected, children can grow and learn, and communities can thrive. On World Food Safety Day, we call for practical action that turns knowledge into prevention and prevention into healthier lives” said Shenaaz El-Halabi, WHO Representative in South Africa.

“Safe food starts with healthy animals and healthy plants. As we mark World Food Safety Day, FAO reaffirms its commitment to strengthening animal and plant health, preventing pests and diseases, and supporting countries to ensure that every person has access to food that is not only available and nutritious, but also safe to consume. Food safety is everyone's responsibility and a cornerstone of sustainable development." said Dr Babagana Ahmadu, FAO Representative in South Africa.

What we are calling for in South Africa

  • Strengthen foodborne disease surveillance and reporting so that concerns are detected early and acted on quickly.
  • Support risk-based inspections across the food chain, focusing attention where the risks are highest.
  • Invest in laboratory capacity, data sharing and coordination between health, agriculture, environment, trade and local government authorities.
  • Expand practical hygiene and food safety training for food handlers in formal and informal settings.
  • Improve access to safe water, sanitation and waste management, especially where food is prepared, sold or served.
  • Encourage every food business, from large manufacturers to small vendors, to build a food safety culture where safe practices are part of everyday work.

What everyone can do today

  • Keep clean: wash hands, utensils and surfaces before preparing food and after handling raw foods.
  • Separate raw and cooked foods to prevent harmful germs from spreading.
  • Cook food thoroughly, especially meat, poultry, eggs and seafood.
  • Keep food at safe temperatures: refrigerate perishable foods and avoid leaving cooked food out for too long.
  • Use safe water and safe raw materials, and wash fruits and vegetables before eating or preparing them.
  • Read labels, follow storage instructions and check expiry dates where they are provided.
  • Seek care and report suspected foodborne illness, especially when symptoms affect children, older persons, pregnant women or people with weakened immune systems.

On this World Food Safety Day, we invite government departments, municipalities, academia, food producers, retailers, health professionals, media, civil society and communities to work together for safer food systems in South Africa.

By sharing knowledge, strengthening systems and taking simple daily actions, we can move from burden to solutions and help ensure safe food everywhere.
