Chaos Beckons if Unity Governments Are Allowed to Fail

17 December 2025 by Guest

Statement by John Steenhuisen MP – Leader of the Democratic Alliance:

As Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), I salute our brave DA caucus in KwaZulu-Natal, our representatives in the provincial government, as well as all of our public representatives and activists who turned out in their numbers today to defeat the destructive Motion of No Confidence tabled by the MK Party against the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) in KwaZulu-Natal. At the same time, the DA condemns the violent and undemocratic conduct on display from MKP and the EFF in the harshest possible terms.

Not only would this motion have collapsed a GPU that is delivering for the people of the province, but the violent anarchy unleashed during the legislature sitting by the MKP and EFF serves as a stark reminder of what is at stake for South Africa.

Make no mistake about it: this was no ordinary motion. It was a dress rehearsal for the chaos that is to come if existing Unity Governments are allowed to fail. The level of violence and destruction on display from MKP and EFF members is a dire warning to all South Africans of what is in store for our beloved country if the forces that are hellbent on collapsing Unity Governments in KwaZulu-Natal and nationally, which are amassed across different political formations, are allowed to succeed.

The chilling scenes we witnessed today in KZN remind us all that the alternative to the builders who are currently working together in the GPU and in the Government of National Unity (GNU), are the violent breakers of the MKP and EFF. They were also a reminder that the Doomsday Coalition has not disappeared, and that their campaign to break down the doors of power is intensifying. While today marked an important victory for the builders in KZN, it is also a clarion call for all peace-loving South Africans to redouble our efforts to protect out country from those who would throw it to the wolves.
