Clamp Down on Illegal Mining Activities

FREE STATE – A Joined disruptive actions operation was carried out between operators deployed for Operation Vala Umthe godi, Operation Knock-out and members of South African National Defense Force on Tuesday 1 October 2024 in Thabong Extension 4. The focus of the operation was to clamp down on illegal mining activities occurring in G-Hostel, the residential areas along Constantia Road and other identified hotspots.

Two (2) suspects aged 33 and 59 were arrested for illegal mining. The team seized Gold bearing material weighing at 20,58 kilograms; self-made phenduka, steel balls and burner pan. A case of possession of suspected gold bearing material and processing equipment was opened at Thabong Police Station. The sweep operation continued and oxygen cylinder with regulators, gas cylinder, cutting torch, phenduka, strainer, and other gold processing equipment were found abandoned. Gold bearing material weighing at 66,62 was also seized.

Further policing actions were executed in Virginia; two (2) males aged 30 and 45 were arrested in Albany Location. The team seized gold bearing material weighing at 5,72 kilograms; hand stumper tool with a holder, burner pan and a strainer. A case of possession of suspected gold bearing material and processing equipment was opened at Virginia Police Station.

All suspects will appear before different Court soon.
