Ask any South African family what happens in October and many will say the same thing: the December holiday stops being an idea and becomes a plan. Leave gets approved, campsite bookings open and someone eventually asks where everyone is going to sleep once the car is packed. Johannesburg outfitter Cloud Camper, which sells rooftop tents, awnings and vehicle camping equipment, is making that decision easier by pairing each tent in its range with the size of the group it is meant to carry.

The thinking behind it is simple. Two people driving into the Karoo for a long weekend have very different needs from a family of four on a two-week coastal holiday. When buyers narrow down Rooftop Tents by how many people need a bed first, and only then by vehicle and style of travel, they avoid overspending and end up with a tent that is neither too tight nor needlessly heavy.

Two sleepers: low profile and fast set-up

For couples, Cloud Camper offers tents that sit low on the roof and open quickly after a long day behind the wheel.

Closed, the Ultra-Slim 9cm Rooftop Tent measures only 9 cm in height. Its hard shell is durable aluminium, while the tent itself is made from 320G ripstop polycotton with a blackout coating. It carries a PU 5000 mm waterproof rating and UPF 50+ UV protection, sleeps two adults, and ships with a 6 cm inflatable mattress and a telescopic aluminium ladder that reaches 2.3 m. Suzuki Jimny owners get a specific word of caution from Cloud Camper: check the vehicle’s roof load rating first, since the combined weight of the tent, rack and hard shell may go over it.

The second couples’ option, the 2-Person Quick Set-Up Car Roof-top Tent, comes with a solar panel bracket and uses tough, weather-resistant fabrics to convert a vehicle into somewhere to sleep within minutes.

Three sleepers: the middle of the range

Bridging the gap is the Easy Set-Up Waterproof Slimline Hardshell Rooftop Tent. This hard shell model opens automatically, is waterproof and UV resistant, and keeps a compact shape on the road. Its ladder is rated to 150 kg. It works well for couples or small families who want extra space but do not need a full four-person tent.

Four sleepers: space for the whole family

Where four people need a bed, Cloud Camper stocks three models. Designed with 4WD camping in mind, the Kalbarri Z 4-Person Hard Shell Roof-top Tent pairs an aluminium hard shell with Oxford and cotton fabrics for waterproofing and UV resistance, and arrives with a mattress, ladder and solar panel bracket. The Cloud Camper XV 4 Sleeper targets families looking for quick set-up and long-lasting construction, while the Navaro 4 Sleeper, built from nylon, polyester and Oxford fabric, rounds out the four-person choices.

The complete selection of Rooftop Tents For Sale, including specifications and up-to-date prices, is listed on the Cloud Camper website for anyone who wants to weigh the models against each other.

Keeping cool and organised at camp

Having somewhere to sleep is only half of a South African summer trip; shade matters just as much. Cloud Camper sells two freestanding side awnings that fix to the vehicle, a 270 degree awning and a 180 degree batwing awning that includes a side wall. Each uses 600D double-ripstop Oxford fabric, is rated waterproof to 3000 mm, offers UV protection of 50+ and accommodates five people.

For everything else on the trip, there is an accessories range. Its headline item is the AR-ON FSS-95 95L Dual-Zone Mobile Fridge/Freezer, which splits into a 52.5 L and a 42.5 L compartment so one can freeze while the other chills, with temperatures adjustable from minus 20 to 10 degrees Celsius. Alongside it are a self-inflating camping mattress, a tent shower, a heavy-duty metal jerry can, a rechargeable camping fan with an LED lantern, and QuickRelease steel mount locks for roof tents and side awnings alike.

Four checks before you buy

When it comes to selecting Roof Top Tents for Cars, Cloud Camper boils its advice down to four points:

  • Vehicle compatibility: confirm the tent will fit your roof rack.
  • Capacity: size the tent for the people travelling and the gear coming with them.
  • Weight: check that the tent is within the vehicle’s roof load capacity.
  • Climate: match the model to the conditions, for example a waterproof tent where rain is likely.

Because rooftop tents are heavy, fitting one is usually a two-person job, and the tent is fixed to the roof rack using mounting brackets. With spring showers about, maintenance is worth keeping in mind too. Cloud Camper advises cleaning the tent after every trip to clear away dirt and moisture, keeping it in a dry place and inspecting it for damage on a regular basis.

Tested from the Karoo to Tanzania

At the time of writing, 31 customers have left reviews on the Cloud Camper website, covering journeys around South Africa and further afield, from the Karoo and Namibia to Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. They point to the build quality, the speed of set-up and the help they got when picking their equipment. A number of reviewers also highlight everyday conveniences: bedding can stay inside when the tent is folded, there is built-in lighting and power, and the tents pack up easily at the end of a stay. First-time buyers can use these accounts to get a realistic sense of how a tent holds up on South African roads.

Visit the showroom by appointment

Cloud Camper operates from Johannesburg, where its showroom is located at Shop 20, Kingswood Centre, 9 Northfield Avenue, Glenhazel. Visits are by appointment only, so anyone who would like to see a tent set up before buying should get in touch with the team to book a slot.

With only a few weeks left before the summer holidays, October leaves families enough room to pick a tent, get it fitted and test it on a weekend away ahead of the long December drive.

I suspect in most companies, the Public Relations person is down at No. 20 in the pecking order. But here, he is fighting incredibly important battles. If a negative story starts running away with itself in the press and is not dealt with fast, it can badly damage the brand, and so we put enormous weight on our PR people. – Richard Branson
