Community that lived decades in harmony shattered by anti-immigration vigilantes

Thembelihle informal settlement near Johannesburg was celebrated in 2008 for standing up against xenophobia, now people are fleeing

Thembelihle informal settlement near Johannesburg won an award in 2008 for taking a stance against xenophobia and living in harmony with immigrants from Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
But now anti-immigrant mobs have attacked, threatened and started extorting immigrants.
The community is fighting back, but many immigrants have already fled and those who remain say they feel unsafe.

After anti-immigration violence swept South Africa two decades ago, Thembelihle informal settlement in Johannesburg won an award in 2008 for living in harmony with immigrants and standing up against xenophobia.
