Love, Lobs and Domestic Survival: Why Couples Are Taking Their Relationships to the Padel Court

As padel continues its meteoric rise across South Africa and the world, couples are discovering that the sport offers more than just a workout, it’s become the ultimate test of communication, teamwork and relationship resilience.

From perfectly executed smashes to heated debates over whose ball it was, mixed doubles is quickly becoming one of the most entertaining social sporting trends among young professionals, families and friendship groups alike.

With the launch of Shawu’s Hills Bush Padel at Shawu’s Hills Wildlife Estate this June, Bluegrass Property Developers is leaning into the lighter side of the game with a tongue-in-cheek look at what really happens when couples step onto the court together.

“Padel is one of the most social sports in the world right now. It brings people together in a relaxed, energetic environment that’s about far more than competition,” says a spokesperson for Bluegrass Property Developers. “We wanted to celebrate the humour and relatability that comes with couples playing together, because almost everyone who’s played mixed doubles has experienced those moments.”

When Teamwork Meets Tension
While the sport is known for its accessibility and fun atmosphere, seasoned players will agree that competitive padel can quickly test even the strongest partnerships.

What begins as supportive encouragement can rapidly evolve into confused calls of “Yours!” and silent stares as the ball bounces untouched between teammates.

From subtle eye-rolls after missed volleys to strategic post-match peace offerings over tapas and drinks, the emotional rollercoaster of couples’ padel has become part of the culture surrounding the sport. Yet despite the occasional tension, many couples continue to return to the court, proving that shared experiences, healthy competition and laughter remain at the heart of the game.

A Sport Built Around Community
Globally recognised as the fastest-growing sport in the world, padel has surged in popularity thanks to its combination of fitness, accessibility and social connection. The sport appeals to players of all ages and skill levels, making it ideal for families, friendship groups and corporate communities alike. The opening of Shawu’s Hills Bush Padel reflects the growing demand for lifestyle-driven recreational spaces that encourage connection, wellness and outdoor living.

Situated within the natural surroundings of Shawu’s Hills Wildlife Estate, the courts aim to offer players a uniquely social sporting experience that blends active living with the estate’s tranquil bush setting.

Opening and Tournament Details

Shawu’s Hills Bush Padel officially opened on 12 June 2026, with court bookings available via the Playtomic app. Players are also invited to take part in the Shawu’s Hills Bush Padel Tournament taking place on 26 June 2026, where couples, friends and competitors alike can put both their padel skills and partnerships to the test.
