GOOD Statement by Suzette Little, GOOD Deputy Secretary-General & City of Cape Town Councillor:
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis was a no-show at the Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court today, where he faces allegations of harassment and abuse of power. The court heard representations from the Mayor’s legal team, but the magistrate made it clear that the Mayor himself is expected to appear in person when the matter resumes on 25 September 2025.
This follows a court application brought by a Cape Town resident who alleges that Hill-Lewis used his political position and access to enforcement agencies to pursue a personal vendetta in a neighbourhood dispute in Bothasig.
The allegations are serious and relate directly to the use of state power for personal purposes. It is deeply concerning that the Mayor did not see fit to appear. He must answer for his actions, not through legal proxies, but in person, before the court and the people of Cape Town.
