Crude Oil Output by Nigeria Falls 4 Percent in July

Nigeria’s crude oil production fell 4% in July to an average of 1.505 million barrels per day, as disruptions at two offshore fields reduced output, according to data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.

Production declined from 1.555 million barrels per day in June, with disruptions at the Erha and Akpo offshore fields contributing to the reduction.

Despite the monthly decline, July output remained slightly above Nigeria’s OPEC production quota of about 1.5 million barrels per day. The latest figure also keeps production above the levels recorded during periods of severe disruption in previous years.

The Erha field, operated by ExxonMobil, and the Akpo field, operated by TotalEnergies, are among Nigeria’s major offshore assets. Production interruptions at large deepwater facilities can have a significant impact on the country’s overall output because of the scale of their operations.

Nigeria has been working to increase crude production after years of underinvestment, oil theft, pipeline vandalism and operational disruptions constrained output. The government has introduced regulatory reforms and incentives aimed at attracting fresh investment into the upstream sector and accelerating the development of new oil projects.

The country is particularly dependent on higher oil production because crude remains a major source of government revenue and foreign exchange. An increase in output would provide additional barrels for export while also supporting the supply of crude to Nigeria’s growing domestic refining industry.

The latest decline comes as Nigeria seeks to sustain production above 1.5 million barrels per day and take advantage of higher global oil prices. The country has also been targeting additional offshore investment, with regulators expecting several major projects to begin production over the next four years.

Offshore production is becoming increasingly important to Nigeria’s recovery strategy because deepwater operations are generally less exposed to the crude theft and pipeline security problems that have affected onshore production.

However, the July decline highlights the vulnerability of overall output to disruptions at individual offshore assets. Maintaining stable production will depend on the reliability of existing fields as well as the timely completion of new developments.

Nigeria’s ability to consistently increase production will remain important for government finances, particularly as the country seeks to reduce fiscal deficits and meet its debt obligations. Higher output would also strengthen foreign exchange inflows and potentially improve the country’s external position.

The government and upstream regulator are therefore under pressure to minimise operational disruptions while accelerating investment in new fields. Sustained production growth would be critical to Nigeria’s ambition of restoring its position as one of Africa’s leading oil producers.
