DA Lodges Complaint of Public Funds Abuse Against Buffalo City Metro

25 October 2024 by Guest

Dear Editor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Buffalo City Metro has lodged a formal complaint with the Public Protector and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) regarding the misuse of public funds related to the provision of security services for certain councillors.

I have written to the Public Protector and the Minister to highlight irregularities in the allocation and ongoing provision of these security services.

The issue centres on the allocation of close protection services to specific councillors, despite the South African Police Service (SAPS) reporting no evidence of direct threats to their safety. We believe that maintaining security without a verified threat for seven months constitutes an abuse of public funds and violates the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act. Additionally, the withdrawal of security for three councillors, based on similar SAPS findings, raises serious questions about the decision-making process.

The complaint also addresses the allocation of an executive vehicle – typically reserved for the Mayor or Deputy Mayor – to a councillor who was not entitled to one, further emphasising the misuse of resources.

The DA is calling for a full investigation into the provision of security services and the use of an executive vehicle for councillors in the absence of credible threats, as well as an assessment of compliance with relevant laws. This should be followed by the recovery of any funds that were improperly spent.

The Democratic Alliance remains committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in Buffalo City, ensuring that public resources are used for the benefit of the community.

Regards

Cllr Anathi Majeke
DA Buffalo City Chief Whip

Fun South African Fact: It’s believed that Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain is one of the oldest mountains in the world. Table mountain is approximately 260 million years old; it’s also home to thousands of species of plant life, including species unique to the Cape Floral Region. The glorious mountain is one of the world’s 7 New Natural Wonders. It is also apparently one of 12 main energy centres on the planet emitting spiritual, magnetic, and electric energies. It’s an idyllic and very popular hiking destination with hundreds of routes to explore.

Now Now – immediately / soon. A confusing phrase for non-locals meaning sometime soon – sooner than just now but quicker than right now.Example: “We’re going to the beach now now!” (But first we have to pack our swimming gear, stop at gas station and maybe get some snacks…).
