Dai Rees Appointed to WRU Council

The Welsh Rugby Union is pleased to announce the appointment of David ‘Dai’ Rees to the WRU Council as a National Council Member, bringing more than 25 years of experience across community, pathway, professional and international rugby environments.

Dai has held senior roles within both Welsh rugby and Hong Kong Rugby Union, earning a strong reputation for designing and leading integrated rugby systems; most notably leading the design and delivery of a fully integrated national rugby system at the Hong Kong Rugby Union whilst serving as their Chief Rugby Operations Officer from 2016 to 2020.

His work has successfully aligned participation, development and elite performance, underpinned by extensive coaching experience across community, professional and international levels, alongside several national coaching roles with the WRU. His achievements include contributing to Asian Games medal success (one gold and two silver), Women’s Rugby World Cup qualification in 2017, multiple Rugby World Cup qualification pathways, and six consecutive World Rugby U20 Trophy qualifications.

Speaking on the appointment, David Rees says:

“It is an honour to join the WRU Council at such a pivotal time for the game in Wales. Throughout my career, I have seen how meaningful progress comes from aligning intent with delivery and I look forward to doing everything I can to help Welsh rugby thrive.

“We have something special here in Wales. A national sport that’s rooted in community. It’s our duty to ensure clubs, coaches and volunteers are supported to grow participation across Wales which will ultimately contribute to a healthy and sustainable pathway system.”

As the current Head of Rugby at Monmouth RFC and Director of Rugby & Board Trustee at Crawshays Welsh RFC, Dai also brings with him a deep understanding of the community game and a passion for inclusion. It’s here where he wants to make his mark.

“My approach is to make inclusion part of everyday decision-making, not a separate initiative, ensuring it is embedded in how the game is run and developed. I am passionate about making rugby more accessible, inclusive and welcoming, and I look forward to contributing to the continued development of the game at every level.”

WRU President Terry Cobner welcomed the appointment, adding:

“Dai brings a huge wealth of knowledge and a global perspective combined with a deep understanding of the Welsh rugby landscape.

“He will be a valuable asset to the Council as we continue to shape the future of Welsh rugby.”

David’s appointment replaces Anthony Buchanan who stepped down from his role earlier this year. David’s term begins with immediate effect and will run until the AGM in 2029.
