Death of Learners in Vanderbijlpark Vehicle Accident

19 January 2026 by Guest

Statement by Sergio Isa Dos Santos MPL – DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is deeply saddened by the tragic accident involving a private scholar transport vehicle in Vanderbijlpark, which has claimed the lives of at least 13 learners.

Five other learners are in critical condition.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and school community affected by this devastating loss.

All circumstances surrounding this tragedy must be fully examined so that families can receive clear answers.

The loss of young lives in this manner is heartbreaking.

We will also keep the injured learners in our thoughts and wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Learner safety must remain a top priority.

A DA-led provincial government would ensure that all scholar transport drivers are properly vetted to ensure that they have the necessary documentation needed to transport learners to and from school.
