Dear Editor
The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the recommendation by the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans (DMV) to place the Department of Military Veterans under administration. This comes after years of systemic dysfunction, chronic mismanagement, and a consistent failure to deliver on its mandate.
Key issues contributing to this state of collapse include chronic understaffing, incompetent senior leadership, and the fact that the acting Director-General does not possess a matric certificate – an alarming reflection of the department’s leadership crisis.
The department’s failure to appoint critical staff has directly hindered the processing and delivery of benefits to deserving military veterans and their dependents. Some have been waiting for assistance since 2011.
The Portfolio Committee’s findings confirm what the DA has consistently highlighted: the DMV is plagued by misadministration, insubordination, and a complete lack of accountability. Placing the department under administration is an essential step toward restoring functionality, ensuring competent leadership, and delivering on long-overdue commitments to South Africa’s military veterans.
The DA will await formal communication from the Chairperson of the Defence Committee regarding the decision, as well as the corresponding letters to the Minister of Defence, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the Office of the President.
Regards
Chris Hattingh MP
DA Spokesperson on Defence & Military Veterans
