Eastern Cape crash claims 13 lives

Thirteen people have lost their lives in a crash that occurred along the N9 in the Eastern Cape on Reconciliation Day.

In a post on social media, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the crash happened at around 5:30 am along the N9, around 30 km from Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape.

“The collision involved a Toyota Quantum Minibus [taxi] and a Mazda CX5, resulting in a devastating loss of life. Thirteen fatalities have been confirmed, all six occupants of the Mazda and seven from the Quantum,” said the RTMC on Monday.

The exact number of injuries from the Quantum is yet to be confirmed.

“The cause of the incident remains unknown and will form part of an ongoing investigation. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. Let us all remain vigilant and prioritise safety on our roads,” said the RTMC.  –SAnews.gov.za
