The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) commends the Islamic Republic of Iran for its resilience and strategic victory over the combined aggression of the United States of America and Israel. The US agreed to a ceasefire just an hour before their deadline to “obliterate” Iran.
What has emerged from this confrontation is that the United States, despite its military arrogance, has been forced to retreat and accept a framework of engagement shaped by Iran itself. Even by its own admission, the administration of Donald Trump has agreed to use Iran’s ten-point plan as the basis for negotiation. This is an extraordinary retreat by a superpower that began this conflict with threats of annihilation.
The EFF notes that Iran has effectively forced the following conditions onto the global agenda, with some conditions that did not exist prior to this war: the lifting of primary and secondary sanctions; release of frozen Iranian assets; control and leverage over the Strait of Hormuz; the withdrawal of US military from the entire Middle East region; an end to all attacks on Iran; a United Nations Security Council resolution to formalise and enforce any agreement; and possible acceptance of Iran’s nuclear programme, among others. This humiliation of the US follows the same trajectory seen in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and decades of blockade, and in Iraq where the US unleashed destruction but failed to secure legitimacy or victory.
This war, driven by imperial arrogance, has already resulted in over 5,000 deaths across multiple countries and plunged the global economy into crisis through disruptions in oil supply. The US and Israel went as far as indiscriminately bombing a school in Iran causing 168 child deaths.
Furthermore, it is working-class people across the world and within the United States itself who bear the cost of reckless militarism as oil prices go up and soldiers are sent to die for nothing.
The EFF reiterates that Donald Trump must face international accountability for actions that escalated war, destroyed civilian infrastructure, and violated the principles of international law.
Having threatened the destruction of an entire civilisation, Trump now seeks to disguise retreat as victory. Even sections of the US media have acknowledged that he cowardly backed down at the final hour, exposing the emptiness of his threats.
Reduced to erratic outbursts and delusional claims of triumph, he represents a declining empire that is loud, aggressive, but increasingly incapable of enforcing its will.
The EFF stands firmly with Iran and all nations resisting imperial domination. Iran’s resistance is part of a global shift away from unipolar control toward a new world order defined by sovereignty, dignity, and resistance. The era of US impunity is coming to an end.
Julius Malema is the most recognized figure in the EFF and has been a controversial political leader.
