The Ekurhuleni Metro’s failure to properly manage the overtime of its Energy Department’s workers recently resulted in a power outage lasting more than 24 hours for Kempton Park residents.

The Department mismanaged its overtime to such an extent that a council resolution was passed which allowed the Department only 40 hours of overtime per month. In addition, the overtime may only be used to address extensive power outages.

Consequently, the misuse of overtime has resulted in a situation where a small, simple power outage cannot be resolved after hours.

So, the power outages that occurred on the nights of 26 and 29 September in Birch Acres could not be resolved swiftly seeing as the monthly overtime allocation had already been used up. Residents had to wait until the following day for repair work to begin.

It is unacceptable that businesses, which are already under immense economic pressure, are expected to rely on alternative power sources or go without electricity.

Residents deserve reliable power supply, not endless excuses.

It is the Head of the Department’s duty to ensure that overtime allocations are not misused, but are effectively utilised so that issues can be addressed swiftly.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) wants to reiterate that the only way to restore accountability and competence to local government is at the polls.
