This week, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) again strongly objected to the Ekurhuleni Metro’s so-called public participation process regarding proposed electricity tariffs.
Although the Metro claims the process is lawful, the majority of residents are effectively excluded seeing as meetings are strategically grouped and scheduled to take place at locations that are hard to reach for several communities.
Residents of Germiston, Alberton, Thokoza and Benoni have to report to the Boksburg Civic Centre, while those from Kempton Park, Edenvale, Brakpan, Springs and Nigel are directed to the KwaThema Community Centre.
Even though limited bus transport and a single live broadcast was promised, the process remains inaccessible to the broader public.
The Freedom Front Plus has repeatedly raised the matter with the Metro, but received no more than a technical, and disappointing, response from its legal division, which still fails to address the issue of exclusion.
Although a virtual participation event is scheduled for 30 September at 18:00, it is not enough to ensure genuine public participation on a matter that financially affects every household.
Public participation should never be a box-ticking exercise – it has to be inclusive, fair and transparent.
The Freedom Front Plus, therefore, demands:
- Comprehensive confirmation of the virtual meeting’s details.
- An electronic submissions channel (email and contact details) where residents can send their input to form part of the official public participation record.
- Widespread dissemination of information about participation opportunities to all communities.
The Metro is under a constitutional obligation to engage with residents in a truly inclusive manner.
The Freedom Front Plus will closely monitor the process and is prepared to escalate the matter to the Gauteng Legislature if residents’ rights are undermined.
Freedom Front Plus Anti-Corruption: The party is vocal against corruption in government and public institutions.
