Elijah Matlombe, or Elijah The Prophet as he is better known, grew up in and around Johannesburg. Now living in Observatory with his parents, the 22-year-old Matlombe, after graduating from the Academy of Sound Engineering, was recently awarded a six-month mentorship contract with Universal Music Publishing, on the basis of his excellent musicality and work ethic.
Before becoming a solo artist in 2017, he was part of a vocal quartet-turned trio, with his best friends. He played drums, sang backing vocals and sometimes lead vocals for songs he wrote. Matlombe started songwriting in 2013 and began singing from a young age. He has been playing the guitar since 2015 and drums professionally since late 2014. He can also play bass and piano.
Being exposed to music, particularly Reggae, at an early age, he was inspired to become a musician. He was also interested in dubbing and got educated in sound engineering to have control over how his music was being recorded and mixed.
Naturally given his musical style, Matlombe looks up to artists like Bob Marley & The Wailers, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Steel Pulse, and The Aggrovators. From a producing perspective, he draws inspiration from the likes of Bunny Lee, Chris Blackwell of Island Records, Joseph Hookim, Leroy Sibbles, and Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes.
For this Academy of Sound Engineering top Alumnus, his advice for others would be to never give up when the going gets tough. He believes that talent is not everything, especially if a person does not understand the music business and marketing.
It all comes down to being dedicated, whether as an artist, engineer, or musician. Putting in the hard work, loving what you do, and being prepared to make sacrifices to fight for one’s passion is vital to succeed in today’s music industry.
Matlombe says that Academy of Sound Engineering provided him with a good foundation and has enabled him not only to write better music but can also record it. Whatever skills he believes he was lacking; the Academy of Sound Engineering provided him with the means to improve on it.

I suspect in most companies, the Public Relations person is down at No. 20 in the pecking order. But here, he is fighting incredibly important battles. If a negative story starts running away with itself in the press and is not dealt with fast, it can badly damage the brand, and so we put enormous weight on our PR people. – Richard Branson

In the US, first of all, the electoral system has been almost totally shredded. For a long time it\’s been pretty much run by private concentrated spending but now it\’s over the top. Elections increasingly over the years have been [public relations] extravaganzas. – Noam Chomsky

\”PR means telling the truth and working ethically – even when all the media want is headlines and all the public wants is scapegoats. Public Relations fails when there is no integrity.\” – Viv Segal of Sefin Marketing
