Ericsson and Yas Tanzania have deployed the first commercial installation in Africa of Ericsson’s AIR 3285 radio, a move aimed at increasing mobile network capacity and improving connectivity across Tanzania.
The deployment, which follows a successful trial, is part of Yas Tanzania’s network modernization programme and will triple 4G capacity, enabling faster speeds and improved coverage, the companies said on Thursday.
The upgrade is expected to support growing demand for data services, including e-learning, remote work, live streaming and high-traffic events, while creating a foundation for future digital services such as Internet of Things applications and smart city solutions.
Hassan Jaber, Group Chief Executive Officer of Yas, told Impact Newswire the deployment reflected the company’s focus on improving connectivity.
“Our partnership with Ericsson on this deployment reflects our continued commitment to enhancing connectivity across Tanzania,” Jaber said. “This first deployment of the technology in Africa marks an important step in our journey, as we introduce advanced Massive MIMO solutions to strengthen our network and better serve individuals, businesses and communities nationwide.”
Ericsson said the AIR 3285 is a dual-band Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) Massive MIMO radio designed to improve network efficiency while reducing deployment challenges. The equipment weighs 31 kilograms and can provide up to four times higher uplink capacity and twice the downlink capacity compared with traditional 4T/4R solutions, according to the company.
Alain Maupin, Vice President and Head of Ericsson East and North Africa at Ericsson Europe, Center East and Africa, said the deployment demonstrated the company’s focus on expanding advanced connectivity solutions.
“This first deployment of AIR 3285 in Africa is a proud moment for Ericsson and a testament to our technology leadership,” Maupin said. “We are dedicated to supporting Yas Tanzania’s vision for a fully connected nation.”
Ericsson and Yas Tanzania have previously worked together on Tanzania’s mobile network development, including the launch of 5G services in 2022 and upgrades to the operator’s 4G network.
The companies said the latest deployment would support continued investment in high-performance mobile networks as demand for digital services grows across Africa.
